لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed نَبَّهتِyou awakened ياO هِندُHind مَيِّتاًa dead man

By my life, Hind, you have indeed awakened a dead man,
one slain by sleep, far away where I lay.
وَلَيلَةَand on a night بِتناwe spent the night بِالجُبوبِon the hard ground تَخَيَّلَتshe appeared as a phantom
لَناto us أَوor رَأَيناهاwe saw her لِماماًfleetingly تَمارِياuncertainly
And on a night we spent on the hard ground, she appeared
to us—or we saw her fleetingly, in doubt.
أَطافَتshe circled بِأَطلاحٍaround exhausted ones وَطَلحٍand weary ones كَأَنَّماas though
لَقواthey met فيin حِياضِthe pools of المَوتِdeath لِلقَومِfor the company ساقِياa cupbearer
She circled the travel-worn and weary, as though
they had met a cupbearer for the company at death's pools.
فَلَمّاthen when أَطافَتshe circled بِالرِحالِaround the saddles وَنَبَّهَتand awakened

Then, when she circled the saddles and awakened
with lavender's scent a weary, sleeping-eyed man,
تَخَطَّتshe traversed إِلَيناto us سَيرَa journey of شَهرٍa month لِساعَةٍin an hour
مِنَof اللَيلِthe night خاضَتهاshe crossed them إِلَيناto us الصَحارِياthe deserts
she crossed a month's journey to us in an hour
of the night, traversing the deserts to reach us.
أَتَتshe came to بِالغَضاat al-Ghada مِنfrom عالِجٍAlij هاجِعاًa sleeper هَوىwho had fallen

From Alij she came to a sleeper at al-Ghada, who had fallen
against the knees of a headstrong she-camel that feared the wastes.
فَباتَتso she spent the night بِناwith us ضَيفاًas a guest دَخيلاًadmitted within وَلاand not أَرىI see

سِوىanything but حُلُمٍa dream جاءَطcame (apparently جاءت) بِهِwith it الريحُthe wind سارِياtraveling by night
She stayed with us as a guest admitted within, though I see
only a dream the wind brought, traveling by night.
وَكانَتand she used to إِذاwhenever ماan emphatic particle الريحُthe wind جاءَطcame (apparently جاءت) بِبَشرِهاwith glad tidings of her
إِلَيَّto me سَقَتنيshe gave me drink ثُمَّthen عادَتshe returned بِدائِياwith my malady
Whenever the wind brought glad tidings of her
to me, she gave me drink, then returned with my malady.
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِيّاهاand she كَمَنlike one who لَيسَis not واجِداًfinding

She and I are like one who can find
no healer but her for the sickness she has caused.
وَأَصبَحَand has become رَأسيmy head بَعدَafter جَعدٍcurly hair كَأَنَّهُas though it were

My head, after curls that looked like
clusters on a vine, now seeks no costly perfumes.
كَأَنّيas though I بِهِin exchange for it اِستَبدَلتُhad taken instead بَيضَةَthe helmet of دارِعٍan armored warrior

It is as though I had traded it for an armored warrior's helmet:
you see scattered tufts along its two edges.

Yet there were times when, if you saw it,
it would enthrall, as singing enthralls maidens.
أَتَيناكَwe have come to you زُوّاراًas visitors وَسَمعاًand hearing وَطاعَةًand obedience
فَلَبَّيكَso at your service ياO خَيرَbest of البَرِيَّةِcreation داعِياas a caller
We have come to you as visitors, hearing and obeying.
At your call, O best of creation when you call!
فَلَوso if أَنَّنيindeed I بِالصينِin China ثُمَّthen دَعَوتَنيyou called me

Were I in China and you then called me,
even without a mount, I would come to you on foot.
وَماand why لِيَfor me لاnot أَسعىI hasten إِلَيكَto you مُشَمِّراًwith garments tucked up

Why should I not hasten to you, my robe tucked up,
and walk despite hardship, when you are my hope?

Your two hands, after God, hold within their palms
ample sustenance for all beneath this sky above us.
وَأَنتَand you are غِياثُthe succor of الأَرضِthe earth وَالناسِand the people كُلِّهِمall of them

بِكَthrough you اللَهُGod قَدindeed أَحياhas revived الَّذيthat which كانَwas بالِياdecaying
You are the succor of the earth and all its people;
through you God has revived what was decaying.

Islam has found, after Muhammad
and his Companions, no guardian of the faith like you.

Abu al-As and Harb lead toward his pool
two Euphrates that have overwhelmed the flowing seas.

When they join in his pool, there pours from them
a flood upon the people, the two overtopping the hills.

No pool has been found like the pool they both feed,
nor a cupbearer like the surge of his two Euphrates.

Atika's son has done no wrong to kingship—she
to whom belongs every full moon that has vanquished the nights.

I see God, through Islam and victory, setting
your heel high above the heel of whoever opposes you.

Risking my own life, choking for breath, I outstripped
the charging lions, toward you on my worn-out mount.

calling on the best father and name invoked in a terror,
apart from God—a terror that turned forelocks gray.

It seeks the Commander of the Faithful; would that it
had brought you my family and my wealth as it called!

With men armored in night against what lay behind them,
with men's souls already risen to their collarbones.

They hurled themselves from Yabrin, or from beyond it,
toward you, racing through the relentless month.

And a flagging mount, whose faltering I soothed with it,
while night had shrouded the empty desert tracts,

and those two had beguiled them with delusive hopes.

the men of Badr, their forelocks bound.

the sons of Marwan showed them, the day they met them
at Babylon, a day that brought the stars into view.

They wept for the faith with God's swords, when they saw
a tyrant at al-Aqr among the black men and the red.
