لَولاwere it not for جَريرٌJarir لَمnot تَكونيyou would have been قَبيلَةًa tribe
بَجيلٌBajil وَلَكِنand yet جَدَّهُhis good fortune بِكِwith you أَصعَداrose aloft
Were it not for Jarir, you would not have been a tribe,
O Bajil; yet his good fortune raised you high.
بِهِthrough him جَمَعَgathered اللَهُGod التَشَتُّتَthe dispersal مِنكُمُfrom among you
كَماjust as جَمَعَتgathered ريحٌa wind جَهاماًrainless clouds مُبَدَّداscattered
Through him God gathered your scattered people,
As a wind gathered scattered, rainless clouds.
وَنَهنَهَand he restrained كَلباًKalb عَنكُمُfrom you بَعدَماafter سَمَتit advanced
لِخالِدِهاagainst her Khalid فيon يَومِa day of ضَنكٍdistress فَعَرَّداso he fled
And he held Kalb back from you after it advanced
Against Bajilah's Khalid on a day of distress, and he fled.
لَيالِيَduring the nights when يَدعوhe called upon اِبنَيthe two sons of نِزارٍNizar لِنَصرِهِto aid him
إِلىappealing to النَسَبِthe kinship الأَدنىclosest إِلَيهِto him فَأَيَّداso both gave aid
In the nights when he called Nizar's two sons to his aid,
Invoking their closer kinship with him, and both gave aid.
وَلَمand he did not يَدعُcall upon مَنthose whom كانَتhad been بَجيلَةُBajilah قَبلَهُbefore him
إِلىappealing to النَسَبِthe lineage المَغمورِobscure لَكِنbut تَمَعدَداhe claimed descent from Ma'add
Nor did he call upon those Bajilah had belonged to before him,
Invoking that obscure lineage; instead, he claimed descent from Ma'add.
أَخالِدُO Khalid لَوif حافَظتُمُyou kept faith وَشَكَرتُمُand you gave thanks
عَرَفتُمyou would have acknowledged لِعَبدِto 'Abd القَيسِal-Qays عِندَكُمُwith you يَداa favor
O Khalid, had you kept faith and shown gratitude,
You would have acknowledged a debt of kindness to 'Abd al-Qays.
هُمُthey مَنَعوكُمprotected you بَعدَماafter قَدalready غَنيتُمُyou had lived
إِماءًslave women لِعَبدِof 'Abd القَيسِal-Qays دَهراًfor an age وَأَعبُداand male slaves
They protected you after you had lived
For an age as slave women and male slaves of 'Abd al-Qays.
