You withheld a gift from a hand that had

No share at a Fazārite’s breast through which to maintain kinship.

No wet nurse from Muḥārib had cradled it,

Nor were its forebears from ignoble Ghanī.

Rather, its father, from Luʾayy ibn Ghālib, was

Manāf, who through it possesses the summit of glory.

Kings and sons of kings, to whom came

From God, through the Criterion, His messages from Him.

Thus, through what you withheld, you became like one grasping

At water, whose fingertips have not seized

Any of the water—but exposed now lie

His vital parts to the two fangs of the slayers’ serpent.

Wretched indeed is his supper for nursing mothers,

When its north winds shake a tent’s ropes.
