تَرومُseeks عَلىover نَعمانَNu‘man فيat الفَجرِdawn ناقَتيmy she-camel
وَإِنand if هِيَshe حَنَّتmoaned كُنتُI was بِالشَوقِin longing أَعذَراmore excusable
At dawn my she-camel seeks her way over Nu‘man,
And if she moans, I have more excuse for longing,
إِلىtoward حَيثُwhere تَلقانيmeets me تَميمٌTamim إِذاwhen بَدَتit appeared
وَزُدتُand I surpassed عَلىbeyond قَومٍa people عُداةٍhostile لِتُنصَراso it might be aided
Toward where Tamim meets me when it appears;
And I surpassed a hostile people, so Tamim might be aided.
فَلَمso not تَرَyou have seen مِثليmy like ذائِداًdefending عَنon behalf of عَشيرَةٍa clan
وَلاnor ناصِراًan ally مِنهُمthan them أَعَزَّmightier وَأَكثَراand more numerous
You have never seen my like defending a clan,
Nor an ally mightier or more numerous than they.
فَإِنَّfor indeed تَميماًTamim لَنwill not تَزولَvanish جِبالُهاits mountains
وَلاnor عِزُّهاits glory هادِيُّهُits guide لَنwill not يُغَيَّراbe changed
For Tamim's mountains will never pass away,
Nor will its glory; its guide will never be changed.
أَقولُI say لَهاto her إِذwhen خِفتُI feared تَحويلَtransferring رَحلِهاher saddle
عَلىonto مِثلِهاone like her جَهداًfrom exhaustion إِذاwhen هُوَhe شَمَّراpressed on
I speak to her, fearing her saddle must be moved
To another like her through exhaustion, when he presses on.
تُساقُshe is driven وَتُمسيand reaches evening بِالجَريضِin choking anguish وَلَمand not تَكُنshe was

She is driven on, choking at dusk, though
No lion has charged upon her to put her in fear.
فَإِنَّfor indeed مُنىthe wishes النَفسِof the soul الَّتيwhich أَقبَلَتshe came بِهاwith them
وَحِلَّand fulfillment نُذوريof my vows إِنif بَلَغتُI reach المُوَقَّراal-Muwaqqar
For the soul's hopes that she has come bearing,
And fulfillment of my vows, await me if I reach al-Muwaqqar.
بِهِin it خَيرُthe best أَهلِpeople الأَرضِof the earth حَيّاًliving وَمَيِّتاًand dead

سِوىexcept مَنthe one بِهِthrough him دينُthe religion البَرِيَّةِof humankind أَسفَراshone forth
There is the best of earth's people, living or dead,
Save him through whom mankind's religion shone forth.
جَزىmay reward اللَهُGod خَيرَthe best المُسلِمينَof Muslims وَخَيرَهُمand the best of them

May God reward the best of Muslims, and the best of them
In bounty of both hands, and their greatest benefactor to the poorest.
إِمامٌan imam كَأَيِّنhow many مِنof إِمامٍan imam نَمىraised بِهِhim
وَشَمسٍand a sun وَبَدرٍand a full moon قَدindeed أَضاءاboth shone فَنَوَّراand shed light
An imam, raised high by many an imam,
And by a sun and full moon that shone and shed light.
وَكانَand was الَّذيwhat أَعطاهُماHe granted them both اللَهُGod مِنهُماfrom them both
إِمامَthe imam الهُدىof guidance وَالمُصطَفىand the chosen one المُتَنَظَّراthe awaited
And what God granted those two, from them both,
Was the imam of guidance and the awaited chosen one.

She received him on a night whose excellence
Above other nights was reckoned at a thousand months.
فَلَيتَso, if only أَميرَthe commander المُؤمِنينَof the faithful قَضىwould decide لَناfor us
فَرُحناthen we departed وَلَمand not تَنظُرyou await غَداًtomorrow مَنone who تَعَذَّراmade excuses
If only the Commander of the Faithful would decide for us,
Then we could leave, and you would not wait tomorrow for one making excuses.
كَأَنَّas though المَطاياthe mounts إِذwhen عَدَلناwe turned صُدورَهاtheir breasts
بَعَثناwe sent forth بِأَيديهاwith their forefeet الحَمامَthe doves المُطَيَّراset flying
It was as though, when we turned the mounts' breasts,
We had set doves flying with their forefeet.
فَكَمand how many مِنof مُصَلٍّa worshipper قَدindeed رَدَدتَyou restored صَلاتَهُhis prayer
لَهُto him بَعدَafter ماthat قَدalready كانَhe had فيamong الرومِthe Romans نُصَّراbeen Christianized
And how many a worshipper's prayer you have restored
To him, after he had been Christianized among the Romans,
يَدَيهِhis two hands بِمَصلوبٍwith a crucified figure عَلىupon ساعِدَيهِماtheir two forearms
فَأَصبَحَso he became قَدindeed صَلّىprayed حَنيفاًa true monotheist وَكَبَّراand proclaimed God's greatness
His hands marked with a crucified figure upon their forearms!
Then he prayed as a true monotheist and proclaimed, 'God is greatest.'
