Al-Maragha, the wallower, weeps in the dust for her son,

and the braying she-asses lament with loud wails.

Herd the braying she-asses into a mourning throng to weep for him,

and offer yourself where the homeward travelers ascend.

Her tears streaming, she wails for her son,

seated in the sand upon Jallal.

They told her: "Bear Jarir's loss seeking God's reward; indeed,

the mighty lion, father of cubs, has done away with him."

    وَردٌ فَدَقَّ مَجامِعَ الأَوصالِ

    The powerfully built one laid both paws upon him;

the tawny lion then crushed the joints of his limbs.

I had warned him—had warning been of use—

not to become the lion's prey.

Indeed, I saw you when you absconded and found no refuge:

you gave yourself a choice among three courses:

between returning to me—a dreadful thing

in your mouth, drawing death near—

or fleeing among the clan of Abu Na'ama,

or joining Tayy of the mountains.

And indeed you contemplated killing yourself alone,

or fleeing to the ships of Awal.

Now, you riders of kid-goats, I have lampooned you

in answer to your satire—by the Reckoner of deeds!

So ask—for you are of Kulayb—and seek

in the two camps what remains of shade.

Indeed, our forbearance is weighed against mountains,

and our hothead surpasses all other hotheads.

Gather your paltry achievements, then, and meet me

at 'Ukaz, you son of a lamb-tetherer.

And about your people and Darim, Jarir, ask

the sojourners whom Mina's valley has gathered:

you will find noble deeds and strength in numbers, both,

in Darim, along with choice provisions.
