    فَلَمَن يُجاريكُم أَشَدُّ لِجامِ

    O sons of Lujaym, you have bridled your rivals;

the harshest bridle is for whoever vies with you.

An axe that strikes his uvula is met by the man

whose molars suffer the fiercest pressure.

So I shall surely give the sons of Hanifa praise,

    in truth—men of sound judgment.

They led when Ma'add raced, through that nobility

whose glorious deeds towered above al-Raqwam.

So the sons of Hanifa defend their women

with the swords of noble men who crush their foes.

A people—by your mother!—whose swords are never drawn

except for a day of death and doom.

Slayers of the kings of every tribe,

and they have slain hunger by giving food.

And those who strike the ram-like chief, his helmets flashing,

and those who plant their feet firmly.

So, were heaven's rain allotted to a band

for its glory, they would have won every cloud first.
