Indeed, my courage benefits me and turns me aside,
When Murrat al-Wadham comes between me and something.

And gray hair is the worst new garment you wear,
And you will never see a worn-out garment worse than decrepitude.

خَيرٌbetter بَنينَin sons وَلاnor خَيرٌbetter مِنَthan الحَكَمِal-Hakam
No father borne by the earth, whom we know,
Has better sons, or is better, than al-Hakam.
الحَكَمُal-Hakam اِبنُson of أَبيAbu (father of) العاصيal-Asi الَّذينَthose who هُمُthey

Al-Hakam son of Abu al-Asi, whose sons are
Rain for the lands and light for people in darkness.

Among them are caliphs through whom rain is sought from the clouds,
And men who charge at champions amid the battle-dust.

Quraysh deemed Abu al-Asi the worthiest among them
Of two things: the auspicious signet-ring and the pen.

They chose, before these people, when they were created,
From among dispositions, the traits of generosity:
مِلءَfilling الجِفانِthe great bowls مِنَof الشيزىshiza wood مُكَلَّلَةًheaped high

Filling the great shiza-wood bowls, heaped high,
And striking mighty warriors when death turns red.
ماnot ماتَdied بَعدَafter اِبنِson of عَفّانَAffan الَّذيwhom قَتَلواthey killed

No one has been lost since Ibn Affan, whom they killed,
Or since Marwan, to Islam and the sanctuaries,
مِثلُthe like of اِبنِson of مَروانَMarwan وَالآجالُand the appointed deaths لاقِيَةٌmeeting
بِحَتفِهاwith their doom كُلَّevery مَنone who يَمشيwalks عَلىon قَدَمِa foot
Like Ibn Marwan—yet appointed deaths meet
All who walk on foot, bringing their doom.
إِنif تَرجِعواyou return قَدalready فَرَغتُمyou have finished مِنwith جَنازَتِهِhis funeral

If you return, having finished his funeral,
Then it was no slight burden you bore upon the timbers:
خَليفَةًa caliph كانَwas يُستَسقىrain is sought الغَمامُthe clouds بِهِthrough him

A caliph through whom rain was sought from the clouds,
The best of those left among the surviving nations.

إِذwhen حَرَّكواthey moved نَعشَهُhis bier الراسيfirmly rooted مِنَof العَلَمِthe mountain
They said, 'Bury him!'—it nearly made the mountain tremble,
When they moved his bier, steadfast as a mountain.
أَمّاas for الوَليدُal-Walid فَإِنَّthen indeed اللَهَGod أَورَثَهُmade him inherit
بِعِلمِهِwith His knowledge فيهِof him مُلكاًa kingdom ثابِتَfirm in الدِعَمِthe pillars
As for al-Walid, God has indeed made him heir,
Knowing him, to a kingdom whose pillars stand firm.
