    Answer Jald's ghostly echo whenever it calls you,

    with sleek horses whose stallions tower over their bridlers.

    تَعادى بِها شُبّانُها وَكُهولُها

    Upon them are defenders from Numayr ibn ʿAmir;

    its young men and its mature men race upon them.

    Do your slaves kill you for no offense,

    while among you are ʿAmir's towering nobles and its finest men?

    For what the captive denies you

    is surely straight and just, its path plain.

    So accept from him no camels bought

    at a paltry price, nor black slaves whose low worth is clear.

    وَإِلّا فَإِنَّ الفَأسَ عارٌ قَتيلُها

    And if you kill with the axe, your slain man will live;

    and if not, disgrace falls upon the axe's victim.
