كَالسامِرِيِّlike al-Samiri يَقولُhe says إِنif حَرَّكتَهُyou stir him
دَعنيleave me فَلَيسَfor there is not عَلَيَّon me غَيرُanything other than إِزاريmy loincloth
Like al-Samiri, he says, if you stir him:
“Leave me; I have nothing on but my loincloth.”
لَولاwere it not for لِسانيmy tongue حَيثُwherever كُنتُI was رَفَعتُهُI raised it
لَرَمَيتُI would have hurled فاقِرَةًa backbreaking blow أَباAbu (father of) سَيّارِSayyar
Had it not been for my tongue, which I raised wherever I was,
I would have dealt Abu Sayyar a backbreaking blow,
فَوقَabove الحَواجِبِthe eyebrows وَالسِبالِand the whiskers كَأَنَّهاas though it were
نارٌfire تَلوحُgleaming عَلىon شَفيرِthe edge of قِتارِQitar
above the brows and whiskers, as though it were
fire gleaming on Qitar's ridge.
إِنَّindeed البَكارَةَthe young camels لاno يَدَيstrength لِصِغارِهاfor their little ones
بِزِحامِin jostling أَصيَدَstiff-necked رَأسُهُhis head هَدّارِloudly bellowing
Indeed, the little ones among young camels lack the strength
to jostle a stiff-necked, bellowing bull.
قَرمٌa breeding bull إِذاwhen سَمِعَheard القُرومُthe breeding bulls هَديرَهُhis roar
وَلَّينَهُthey turned away from him وَرَمَينَand they cast out بِالأَبعارِdung
A breeding bull—when the other bulls hear his roar,
they turn their backs on him and drop dung.
كَمhow many a خالَةٍmaternal aunt لَكَof yours ياO جَريرُJarir وَعَمَّةٍand paternal aunt
فَدعاءَcrook-limbed قَدindeed حَلَبَتshe milked عَلَيَّfor me عِشاريmy pregnant she-camels
How many a maternal aunt of yours, Jarir, and paternal aunt,
crook-limbed, has milked my pregnant she-camels for me!
كُنّاwe used to نُحاذِرُwe feared أَنthat تَضيعَthey might stray لِقاحُناour milk camels
وَلَهاًin longing إِذاwhen سَمِعَتthey heard دُعاءَthe call of يَسارِYasar
We used to fear that our milk camels would stray
in longing when they heard Yasar's call.
شَغّارَةٍone who lifts her leg تَقِذُshe strikes الفَصيلَthe camel-calf بِرِجلِهاwith her foot
فَطّارَةٍa vigorous milker لِقَوادِمِof the fore-teats of الأَبكارِfirst-calving she-camels
A leg-lifter, kicking the camel-calf with her foot,
a vigorous milker of first-calving camels' fore-teats,
كانَتshe used to تُراوِحُshe alternated عاتِقَيهاher two shoulders عُلبَةًa milk-bowl
خَلفَbehind اللِقاحِthe milk camels سَريعَةَquick الإِدرارِat inducing milk-flow
she would shift a milk-bowl from shoulder to shoulder,
following the milk camels, quick to draw their milk.
وَلَقَدand indeed عَرَكتُI battered بَنيthe sons of كُلَيبٍKulayb عَركَةًa battering
وَتَرَكتُهُمand I left them فَقعاًtruffles بِكُلِّin every قَرارِhollow
And I have indeed battered the sons of Kulayb soundly,
and left them like truffles in every hollow.
