أَحَبُّI love مِنَamong النِساءِwomen وَهُنَّand they are شَتّىvaried
حَديثَspeech النَزرِscantness وَالحَدَقَand eyes الكِلالاlanguid
Among women, varied though they are, I love
scant speech and languid eyes:
مَوانِعُbarriers لِلحَرامِagainst the forbidden بِغَيرِwithout فُحشٍcoarseness
وَتَبذُلُand she gives freely ماwhat يَكونُis لَهاfor her حَلالاlawful
they bar the forbidden without harshness,
and each gives freely what is lawful to her.
وَجَدتُI have found الحُبَّlove لاnot يَشفيهِcures it إِلّاexcept
لِقاءٌa meeting يَقتُلُkills الغُلَلَburning thirsts النِهالاthirsty
I have found that nothing cures love but
a meeting that quenches burning, unslaked thirst.
أَقولُI say لِنِضوَةٍto a worn-out she-camel نَقِبَتwere worn raw يَداهاher forefeet
وَكَدَّحَand has chafed رَحلُthe saddle راكِبِهاof her rider المَحالاthe vertebrae
I say to a worn-out she-camel whose forefeet are worn raw,
and whose rider’s saddle has chafed her spine:
وَلَوand if تَدريshe understood لَقُلتُI would say لَهاto her اِشمَعِلّيhasten
وَلاand do not تَشكيcomplain إِلَيَّto me لَكِyour own الكَلالاweariness
And if she understood, I would tell her: Hasten,
and do not complain to me of your weariness.
فَإِنَّكِfor you قَدalready بَلَغتِhave arrived فَلاso do not تَكونيbe
كَطاحِنَةٍlike a grinding mill وَقَدand already مُلِئَتhas been filled ثِفالاflour-catching cloth
For you have already arrived, so do not be
like a grinding mill with its flour-cloth already full.
فَإِنَّfor indeed رَواحَكِyour rest الأَتعابُhard toil عِنديin my view
وَتَكليفيand my imposing لَكِon you العُصَبَthe bands العِجالاhurrying
For your rest, in my view, is hard toil,
and my making you keep pace with hurrying bands,
وَرَدّيand my bringing back السَوطَthe whip مِنكِon you بِحَيثُwhere لاقىmet
لَكِyour الحَقَبُthe rear girth الوَضينَthe plaited saddle-band بَحَيثُwhere جالاit moved
and my bringing the whip back upon you where
your rear girth meets the saddle-band, where it moves.
فَماfor not تَرَكَتhas left لَهاfor her صَحراءُthe desert غَولٍGhawl
وَلاnor الصَوّانُthe flint مِنfrom جَذَمٍJadham نِعالاsoles
For Ghawl’s desert has not left her—
nor has Jadham’s flint—any soles.
تُدَهديshe rolls الجَندَلَthe boulders الحَرِّيَّof the lava field لَمّاwhen
عَلَتshe climbed ضَلِضاًrugged ground تُناقِلُهُpicking her way over it نِقالاstep by step
She sends the lava-field’s boulders tumbling when
she climbs rugged ground, picking her way step by step.
فَإِنَّfor indeed أَمامَكِahead of you المَهدِيَّal-Mahdi يَهديguides
بِهِthrough him الرَحمَنُthe All-Merciful مَنwhoever خَشِيَfeared الضَلالاgoing astray
For ahead of you stands al-Mahdi; guidance comes
through him from the All-Merciful to whoever fears straying.
وَقَصرُكِand what suffices you مِنfrom نَداهُhis bounty فَبَلِّغينيso bring me
كَفَيضِlike the flood البَحرِof the sea حينَwhen عَلاit rose وَسالاand flowed
And what suffices you of his bounty—so bring me to him—
is like the sea’s flood when it rises and flows.
نَظَرتُكَI awaited you ماas long as اِنتَظَرتُI awaited اللَهَGod حَتّىuntil
كَفاكَHe spared you الماحِلينَthe schemers بِكَagainst you المَحالاscheming
I awaited you as long as I awaited God, until
He spared you the plots of those scheming against you.
نَظَرتُI awaited بِإِذنِكَwith your permission الدَولاتِturns of fortune عِنديat my place
وَقُلتُand I said عَسىperhaps الَّذيHe who نَصَبَset up الجِبالاthe mountains
With your permission, I awaited fortune’s turns where I was,
and said: Perhaps He who set the mountains in place...
