Bishr ibn Marwan has, in every circumstance

of time, preeminence—in prosperity and in hardship.

Quraysh’s foremost man, and he who sold his property

to earn praise when no one else gives aid.

Bishr vies in generosity and munificence

to attain the utmost heights of nobility, with praise.

How many a young man have your two hands relieved, O Bishr,

in his destitution—and how many a people have you deliberately impoverished!

And you have made a poor man rich, and a wealthy man

poor; and you have given gifts to each without a promise.
