لَوif كُنتَyou were صُلبَsturdy العودِthe timber أَوor كَاِبنِlike the son of مَعمِرٍMaʿmir
لَخُضتَyou would have waded into حِياضَthe pools of المَوتِdeath وَاللَيلُwhile the night مُظلِمُwas dark
Had you been of sturdy timber, or like Ibn Maʿmir,
you would have waded into death’s pools while the night was dark.
وَلَكِنbut أَبىrefused قَلبٌa heart أُطيرَتwere put to flight بَناتُهُits daughters
وَعِرقٌand a vein لَئيمٌignoble حالِكُdark اللَونِin color أَدهَمُjet-black
But a heart whose daughters were put to flight refused,
and an ignoble vein, dark in hue, jet-black.
