And when she saw what used to shelter behind her

And before her, stripped bare by its lean beasts—

A mass of prized livestock, whose evening resting place had been

With her; its cloven-hoofed stock and camel herd had perished—

She wept, fearing ruin in Syria, if we were cast

There by a fate whose blows were harsh.

So do not be distraught; I shall make my journey

To God and the one who builds for Him, who is His agent:

Sulayman, rain for the drought-stricken, and the one through whom

The wretched pauper's chains were loosed.

No shepherd has arisen since the Prophet Muhammad died,

And Uthman, anywhere on earth, to equal him.

I see every sea but yours now has

Shores cracking as its running waters dry.

As though the dark Euphrates flowed with foam,

Its channels opened between the houses.

And they know desire will never sway you,

And whatever you say, you will surely do.

No people seek anything, however costly,

Of good, but its bounties lie in your hands.

I see that God—after ninety years had passed for Him,

And six beyond the ninety, His favors returned

To us; He does not turn aside, just as He had afflicted us

For an age whose heavy breast pressed hard upon us—

Has chosen the best of men as a mercy to mankind,

And a house ancient in lineage when its forebears are counted.

And He was the One who named him after His prophet,

Sulayman; indeed God, Lord of the Throne, will make him

Security for the people, gathering them as one community,

And life-giving rain for the people, its downpour bringing growth.

So you revived those of us you reached, through a practice

That would not yield: no falsehood mingled with its truth.
