أَلاAh! حَبَّذاhow lovely is البَيتُthe house الَّذيthat أَنتَyou هايِبُهfearful of it
تَزورُyou visit بُيوتاًhouses حَولَهُaround it وَتُجانِبُهand you avoid it
Ah, how lovely the house you fear to approach!
You visit houses around it, yet avoid it.
تُجانِبُهُyou avoid it مِنfrom غَيرِother than هَجرٍabandonment لِأَهلِهِof its people
وَلَكِنَّbut عَيناًan eye مِنof عَدُوٍّan enemy تُراقِبُهwatches it
You avoid it without forsaking its people,
but an enemy's eye keeps watch on it.
أَرىI see الدَهرَtime أَيّامُthe days of المَشيبِgray hair أَمَرُّهُits bitterest
عَلَيناfor us وَأَيّامُand the days of الشَبابِyouth أَطايِبُهits choicest
I see that time's bitterest days are those of gray hair
for us, and its choicest are the days of youth.
وَفيand in الشَيبِgray hair لَذّاتٍpleasures وَقُرَّةُand comfort for أَعيُنٍeyes
وَمِنand from قَبلِهِbefore it عَيشٌa life تَعَلَّلَfound solace جادِبُهits critic
Yet gray hair holds pleasures and comfort for the eyes,
and before it was a life even its critic found solace in.
إِذاwhen نازَلَmet in combat الشَيبُgray hair الشَبابَyouth فَأَصلَتاthen both unsheathed
بِسَيفِهِماwith their swords فَالشَيبُthen gray hair لاno بُدَّescape غالِبُهwill defeat it
When gray hair meets youth in combat and both draw
their swords, gray hair will inevitably defeat it.
فَياthen O خَيرَbest مَهزومٍvanquished one وَياand O شَرَّworst هازِمٍvictor
إِذاwhen الشَيبُgray hair راقَتappeared splendid لِلشَبابِto youth كَتايِبُهits battalions
Then, O best of the vanquished, and O worst of victors,
when gray hair's battalions appear splendid to youth!
وَلَيسَand not شَبابٌyouth بَعدَafter شَيبٍgray hair بِراجِعٍreturning
يَدَthroughout الدَهرِall time حَتّىuntil يَرجَعَputs back الدَرَّthe milk حالِبُهits milker
Youth will not return after gray hair,
for all time—until the milker puts the milk back into the udder.
وَمَنand whoever يَتَخَمَّطtyrannizes over بِالمَظالِمِwith injustices قَومَهُhis people
وَلَوeven if كَرُمَتare noble فيهِمamong them وَعَزَّتand are mighty مَضارِبُهhis ancestral roots
And whoever tyrannizes over his people with injustices,
even if his roots among them are noble and mighty,
يُخَدَّشis scratched بِأَظفارِby the nails of العَشيرَةِthe clan خَدُّهُhis cheek
وَتُجرَحand are wounded رُكوباًfrom being ridden صَفحَتاهُhis two flanks وَغارِبُهand his withers
will have his cheek scratched by the clan's nails,
and his flanks and withers wounded from being ridden.
وَإِنَّand indeed اِبنُthe son of عَمِّthe paternal uncle of المَرءِthe man عِزُّthe strength of اِبنِthe son of عَمِّهِhis paternal uncle
مَتىwhen ماever يَهِجis roused لاnot يَحلُis sweet لِلقَومِto the people جانِبُهhis flank
And a man's cousin is indeed his cousin's strength:
whenever he is roused, his flank is no sweet morsel for the people.
وَرُبَّand many a اِبنِson of عَمٍّa paternal uncle حاضِرِever-present in الشَرِّharm خَيرُهُhis goodness
مَعَwith النَجمِthe constellation مِنfrom حَيثُwhere اِستَقَلَّتrose high كَواكِبُهits stars
And many a cousin's harm is close at hand, while his goodness
is with the constellation, where its stars rise high.
فَلاso not ماwhat نَأىlies far away مِنهُfrom him مِنَof الشَرِّevil نازِحٌdistant
وَلاand not ماwhat دَناdraws near مِنهُto him مِنَof الخَيرِgood جالِبُهbringing it
So no evil, however far from him, is truly distant,
and no good, however near him, does he bring.
فَماso not المَرءُa man مَنفوعاًbenefited بِتَجريبِby the experience of واعِظٍa counselor
إِذاif لَمnot تَعِظهُadmonish him نَفسُهُhis own soul وَتَجارِبُهand his experiences
So a man gains nothing from a counselor's experience
if his own soul and experiences do not admonish him.
وَلاand no خَيرَgood ماas long as لَمnot يَنفَعِbenefits الغُصنُthe branch أَصلَهُits root
وَإِنand if ماتَhe dies لَمnot تَحزَنgrieve عَلَيهِfor him أَقارِبُهhis relatives
And there is no good unless the branch benefits its root;
and if he dies, his kin do not mourn him.
