Was not the slaying of ʿAbd al-Qays an injustice—
Was not the unjust killing of ʿAbd al-Qays,
O Abu Hafs—one of the gravest sacrileges?
O Abu Hafs, among the grave violations of sanctity?

A victim of enmity, who had committed no crime,
Slain out of enmity, he had committed no sin;
he was hacked to pieces while crying, “Forward!”
He is cut to pieces while crying out for the imam.
