He aided him
بِهِمthrough them إِذwhen دَعاhe called upon رَبَّthe Lord of العِبادِhumankind لِيَنصُراso He might grant victory
Al-Hajjaj summoned troops when God aided him
Through them, when he called on the Lord of mankind to grant victory:
بِشَهباءَwith a gray host لَمnot تُشرَبbe made to drink نِفاقاًhypocrisy قُلوبُهُمtheir hearts
شَآمِيَّةٍSyrian تَتلوreciting الكِتابَthe Book المُنَشَّراspread open
With a gray host whose hearts had not been steeped in hypocrisy,
Syrian, reciting the Book spread open;
بِسُفيانَwith Sufyan وَالمُستَبصِرينَand the clear-sighted كَأَنَّهُمas though they were
جِمالٌcamels طَلاهاhe smeared them بِالكُحَيلِwith tar وَقَيَّراand coated with pitch
With Sufyan and the clear-sighted, as though they were
Camels he had smeared with tar and coated with pitch.
لَوif أَنَّهُمthat they إِذwhen نافَقواthey acted hypocritically كانَthere was مِنهُمُamong them
يَهودِيُّهُمtheir Jew كانواthey would have been بِذَلِكَfor that أَعذَراmore excusable
If, when they turned hypocrites, there had been among them
Their own Jew, they would have had more excuse for that.
وَلَكِنَّماbut only اِقتادواthey took their lead بِحَوّاكِfrom a weaver of قَريَةٍa village
لَئيمٍbase كَهامٍdull أَنفُهُhis nose قَدalready تَقَشَّراhad peeled
But they only took their lead from a village weaver,
Base and dull, his nose already peeled.
مُحَرَّقَةٌscorched لِلغَزلِfrom spinning أَظفارُthe fingernails of كَفِّهِhis hand
لِتَدقيقِهِfrom his fine weaving of ذاthe one with الطُرَّتَينِthe two borders المُحَبَّراpatterned
His fingernails are scorched from spinning,
From his fine weaving of the patterned cloth with twin borders.
عَشِيَّةَthat evening يُلقونَthey cast off الدُروعَthe coats of mail كَأَنَّهُمas though they were
جَرادٌlocusts أَطارَتهُsent them flying الدَبورُthe west wind فَطَيَّراthen scattered them
That evening they cast off their mail, as though they were
Locusts lifted and scattered by the west wind.
وَهُمwhile they قَدindeed يَرَونَthey see المَوتَdeath مِنfrom بَينِbetween مُقعَصٍone slain outright
وَمِنand from وائِبٍone rushing فيin حَومَةِthe thick of المَوتِdeath أَكدَراdark
While they saw death between one slain outright
And one rushing, dark, in the thick of death.
رَأَواthey saw أَنَّهُthat it was مَنwhoever فَرَّfled مِنfrom زَحفِthe advance of مِثلِهِمtheir equals
يَكُنwould be حَطَباًfirewood لِلنارِfor the Fire فيمَنamong those who تَكَبَّراgrew arrogant
They saw that whoever fled the advance of their equals
Would be firewood for the Fire, among those who grew arrogant.
