A petitioner has made his camel kneel before you, long kept far away
by his dwelling, yet close in kinship and mindful of its ties.
تَذَكَّرَhe remembered أَينَwhere الجابِرونَthose who mend قَناتَهُhis spear-shaft

He remembered where to find those who would mend his spear-shaft,
and said, “The sons of my uncle, Aban ibn Darim.”
رَمَواthey cast لِيَfor me رَحليmy encampment إِذwhen أَنَختُI made my camel kneel إِلَيهِمُamong them

They showered my encampment, when I alighted among them,
with sturdy, headstrong she-camels and milch-camels fond of their young.

And they said, “Layla’s son will guarantee the payment
through which the culprit, unyielding to the bit, is freed.”

Their numbers among their people double the pebbles,
and they possess abundant livestock, no scanty herds.

For with them I am like a bucket’s owner, his bucket lowered
to a water-drawer whom no visitor can fault.

I passed other peoples by to come to you, although they
were indeed inviting me; I chose you for grave affairs.

You were a people whose wealth would heal,
together with your forbearance, the widening breach of discord.

They are what they are in defending honor and welcoming guests,
and striking the tribe’s rams upon their skulls.

And surely my encampment among you will be a meeting place
for riders from Najd and people of the seasonal gatherings.

And where shall I alight after you, if you recoil
from me? Do the edges of keen swords glance aside?
أَلَيسَis not أَبيmy father أَدنىbrought near أَباكُمyour father وَأَنتُمُand you
بِماthrough what كانَused to يَلقىencounter سَيفُهُhis sword كُلَّevery جارِمِwrongdoer
Did not my father draw your father close—and you too—
through his sword’s encounters with every wrongdoer?

No brothers of ours would we trade you for,
in standing by a kinsman and chastising an oppressor.
