يَهديguides بِهِthrough him اللَهُGod بَعدَafter الفِتنَةِthe strife البَشَراhumankind
God's caliph, one of them, among his subjects—
through him God guides humankind after strife.
بِهِthrough him جَلاdispelled الفِتنَةَthe strife العَمياءَthe blind فَاِنكَشَفَتand so it cleared away
كَماjust as جَلاdispelled الصُبحُdawn عَنهُfrom itself اللَيلَthe night فَاِنسَفَراand so it stood unveiled
Through him He dispelled blind strife, and it cleared away,
as dawn drove night from itself and stood unveiled.

If I had two lives, so that, should there perish
one of them, the other would remain for the survivor,
إِذاًthen لَجِئتُI would surely have come عَلىdespite ماwhatever كانَthere was مِنof وَجَلٍfear

then I would have come, despite whatever fear there was;
yet I have found no caution that overcomes fate.

Every man is safe from fear when granted safety by
Bishr ibn Marwan; terrified is the man he terrifies.

A branch whose lineage branched among the Aʿyāṣ
and the two ʿĀmirs; his is Mudar's proud nose.

Wrapped in kingship's mantle, he is followed by
a wave above which you see banners and dust,

of every rangy mare whose heels bleed
from hoof-soreness, and stallions tossing their manes.

And the horses drop their noble foals prematurely;
you can scarcely distinguish their stockings and blazes—

dark bay, from which birds tear away cloaks
like eggs' inner membranes, which had hidden hair beneath them:

as I tore edge-strips from the ʿurḍiyya cloth.

Bishr's walking upon the earth adorns it,
and no guilty man fixes his gaze upon him.
