عَمَدتَyou aimed إِلىat بَدرِthe full moon السَماءِheaven وَدونَهُand beneath it
نَفانِفُvast expanses تَثنيturn back الطَرفَthe gaze أَنfrom يَتَصَعَّداascending
You aimed at heaven’s full moon, while beneath it
lie vast expanses that turn the gaze back from ascending.
هَجَوتَyou lampooned عُبَيداًUbayd أَنbecause قَضىhe passed judgment وَهوَthough he was صادِقٌtruthful
وَقَبلَكَand before you ماindeed (emphatic) غارَwent into the lowlands القَضاءُjudgment وَأَنجَداand went into the uplands
You lampooned Ubayd for passing judgment, though he was truthful;
yet before your time, judgment had traversed lowlands and uplands.
وَقَبلَكَand before you ماindeed (emphatic) أَحمَتdefended عَدِيٌّAdi دِيارَهاits lands
وَأَصدَرَand led away from water راعيهِمtheir herdsman بِفَلجٍat Falj وَأَورَداand led to water
And long before you, Adi defended its lands,
and at Falj their herdsman led the flock from water and to it.
هُمُthey مَنَعواdefended يَومَon the day of الصُلَيعاءُal-Sulayʿāʾ سِربَهُمtheir flock
بِطَعنٍwith spear-thrusts تَرىyou see فيهِin which النَوافِذَthe penetrating wounds عُنَّداgushing blood
They defended their flock on the day of al-Sulayʿāʾ
with spear-thrusts whose piercing wounds you see gushing blood.
وَهُمand they مَنَعواwithheld مِنكُمfrom you إِرابَIrab ظُلامَةًwrongfully
فَلَمso did not تَبسُطواyou stretch out فيهاin it لِساناًa tongue وَلايَداnor a hand
And they wrongfully withheld Irab from you,
so there you stretched out neither tongue nor hand.
وَمِنand from قَبلِهاbefore it عُذتُمyou sought refuge بِأَسيافِin the swords of مازِنٍMazin
غَداةَon the morning كَسَواthey clothed شَيبانَShayban عَضباًa keen sword مُهَنَّداof Indian steel
And before that, you sought refuge in Mazin’s swords,
the morning they clothed Shayban in keen Indian steel.
