لَقَدindeed أَحجَمَتshrank back عَنّيfrom me فُقَيمٌFuqaym مَخافَةًout of fear
كَماjust as أَحجَمَتshrank back يَومَon the day of القُبَيباتِal-Qubaybat نَهشَلُNahshal
Fuqaym has indeed shrunk from me in fear,
as Nahshal shrank back on the day of al-Qubaybat.
وَقَدand may well يَركَبُride into المَوتَdeath الفَتىthe young man مِنbecause of مُضيمَةٍhumiliation
إِذاwhen لَمnot يَكُنthere be إِلّاexcept إِلىtoward المَوتِdeath مَزحَلُa way out
And a young man may ride into death because of humiliation,
when there is no way out except toward death.
فَقَلَّso was slight غَناءًthe benefit عَنfor فُقَيمٍFuqaym وَنَهشَلٍand Nahshal
أَراجيزُrajaz verses يُذريهاhe scatters them الضَلالُfolly المُضَلَّلُmisguided
So of little avail to Fuqaym and Nahshal are
the rajaz verses that misguided folly scatters.
