قَضَيتَyou decreed قَضاءًa decree فيconcerning الخِلافَةِthe caliphate ثابِتاًfirm
مِبيناًclear فَقَدfor indeed أَسمَعتَyou made hear مَنwhoever كانَwas ذاpossessed of عَقلِreason
You have rendered a firm judgment concerning the caliphate,
a clear one: you have made everyone endowed with reason hear.
فَمَنso who ذاthis الَّذيwho يَرجوhopes for الخِلافَةَthe caliphate مِنهُمُamong them
وَقَدand indeed قُمتَyou stood فيهِمamong them بِالبَيانِwith clear exposition وَبِالفَصلِand with decisive judgment
So who among them can hope for the caliphate,
when you have stood among them with clarity and decisive judgment?
وَبَيَّنتَand you made clear أَنthat لاno حَقَّright فيهاto it لِخاذِلٍfor one withholding support
تَرَبَّصَhe waited فيin شَكٍّdoubt وَأَشفَقَand was afraid مِنof مَثلِexemplary punishment
And you have shown that no right to it belongs to one who withheld support,
who waited in doubt and feared exemplary punishment;
وَلاnor لِاِمرِئٍfor a man آتىgave المُضِلّينَthose who lead astray بَيعَةًa pledge of allegiance
رَأىhe saw الحَربَwar أَبدَتbared عَنfrom نَواجِذِهاits molars العُصلِcrooked
nor to a man who pledged allegiance to those who lead astray,
when he saw war bare its crooked molars,
وَمَدَّand extended يَداًa hand مِنهُof his لِبَيعَةِfor allegiance to خاسِرٍa loser
وَماand not المُكسِدُthe trader with unsold wares المَغبونُthe cheated one كَالرابِحِlike one who profits المُغليwho sells dear
and extended his hand to pledge allegiance to a loser.
The cheated trader with unsold wares is not like one who profits and sells dear.
وَعانَدَand resisted stubbornly لَمّاwhen أَنthat رَأىhe saw الحَربَwar شَمَّرَتgirded itself
عِنادَthe obstinacy of الخَصِيِّthe castrated male الجَونِblack صَدَّturned away عَنِfrom الفَحلِthe stallion
And he resisted stubbornly when he saw war gird itself,
with the obstinacy of a black gelding turning away from the stallion.
فَماso what بالُthe matter with أَقوامٍpeople بَداbecame apparent الغِشُّtreachery مِنهُمُfrom them
وَهُمwhile they كُشُفٌunarmed عِندَin the face of الشَدائِدِhardships وَالأَزلِand want
So what ails people whose treachery has become plain,
though they stand unarmed before hardship and want?
يُداوُونَthey treat مِنof قَرحٍa sore أَدانيهِits nearer parts قَدalready عَتاhas grown severe
عَلىupon الداءِthe disease لَمnot تُدرَكhave been reached أَقاصيهِits furthest depths بِالفُتلِwith lint wicks
They treat a sore's nearer parts, though it has grown severe
with disease; no lint wicks have reached its furthest depths.
وَقَدand indeed كانَthere was مِمّاin what قَدalready تَلَواthey recited مِنof حَديثِهِمtheir accounts
شِفاءٌhealing وَكانَand was الحِلمُforbearance يَشفيheals مِنَfrom الجَهلِfolly
And in the accounts they had recited there had been
healing; and forbearance would heal folly.
وَإِلّاand if not فَإِنَّthen indeed المَشرِفِيَّةَthe Mashrafi swords حَدُّهاtheir edge
دَواءٌa remedy لَهُمfor them غَيرَrather than الدَبيبِstealthy creeping وَلاnor الخَتلِguile
Otherwise, the Mashrafi swords—their edge
is a cure for them, not stealthy creeping or guile.
أَوِor النَفيُexile حَتّىuntil عَرضُthe breadth of أَرضٍa land وَطولُهاand its length
عَلَيهِمfor them كَبَيتِlike the house of القَينِthe smith أُغلِقَwas shut بِالقَفلِwith a lock
Or exile, until a land's breadth and length
are to them like a smith's house, shut with a lock.
وَقَدand indeed خَذَلواthey abandoned مَروانَMarwan فيin الحَربِwar وَاِبنَهُand his son
أَباكَyour father وَأَدلَواand pressed claims فيهِماagainst them both مَعَwith مَنthose who يُدليpresses a claim
They abandoned Marwan in war, and his son,
your father, and joined others in pressing claims against them both.
وَكاناand they both were إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle كانَthere was يَومُa day of عَظيمَةٍgrave calamity
حَمولَينِboth stout burden-bearers لِلأَثقالِof heavy burdens فيin الأَمرِthe affair ذيpossessing البَزلِseverity
And whenever a day of grave calamity came, the two were
stout bearers of burdens in affairs of great severity.
فَصَلّىso may He bless عَلىupon قَبرَيهِماtheir two graves اللَهُGod إِنَّماindeed
خَلائِقُهُhis qualities مِنهاfrom them عَلىin accordance with سُنَّةِthe way of الرُسلِthe messengers
So may God bless their two graves; indeed,
his qualities, drawn from them, follow the messengers' way.
فَفُزتَso you won بِماwith what فازاthey both won بِهِwith it مِنof خِلافَةٍa caliphate
وَزِدتَand you exceeded عَلىbeyond مَنwhoever كانَwas قَبلَكَbefore you بِالحَصلِin achievement
Thus you have gained the caliphate that both gained,
and surpassed those before you in achievement,
بِعافِيَةٍwith well-being كانَتwas مِنَfrom اللَهِGod جَلَّلَتclothed
مَشارِقَهاits eastern reaches أَمناًwith safety إِلىto مَغرِبِthe western horizon of الأُملِhope
with well-being from God that has clothed
its eastern reaches in safety, as far as hope's western horizon.
