Leave off turning back and complaining to me, for there is

a host of needs whose fulfillment is hoped for

when she meets al-Walid bearing me, and then chokes,

her cough surging up with her own blood.

When she stumbles beneath me, I say, “Up with you!”—and ends

at the door of al-Walid’s dwellings her exhaustion.

And many a camel like you have I wearied until I made her kneel

    where the men of Qusayy grew prosperous;

where, from Lu’ayy son of Ghalib, there passed

into his house their ancestral honors and their sheltering shades.

To the house of Marwan, for whom there have always been

pillars of kingship whose mountains cannot be assailed.

To the seeker of recompense, son of imams: its return

to him, after his two companions’ reigns, restores its balance.

A crescent from which the cloud cleared, one night old:

its crescent has now waxed until it became a full moon.

To the lord of young men, for whom has been secured

the caliphate of kings, whose succession passes to him.

To you, heir to the covenant and compact of a father

who holds, from his followers, the loops and their cords.

The great man of the two towns begot you, and so became

yours the firmest handhold, its strands tightly woven,

binding the people. They gave it to your father, and so came

to him the keys of affairs and their wealth.
