إِذاwhen وَعَدَpromises الحَجّاجُal-Hajjaj أَوor هَمَّresolves أَسقَطَتcauses to miscarry
مَخافَتُهُfear of him ماwhat فيin بُطونِthe wombs of الحَوامِلِpregnant women
When al-Hajjaj promises or resolves, there falls
from dread of him what pregnant women's wombs contain.
لَهُhe has صَولَةٌan onslaught مَنwhoever يوقَهاis spared it أَنthat تُصيبَهُit strikes him
يَعِشlives on وَهوَwhile he is مِنهاfrom it مُستَخَفُّmade light الخَصائِلِthe muscles
His is an onslaught: whoever is spared its blow
lives on, his flesh wasted by it.
وَلَمand not أَرَI have seen كَالحَجّاجِlike al-Hajjaj عَوناًa helper عَلىtoward التُقىpiety
وَلاnor طالِباًa pursuer يَوماًever طَريدَةَthe quarry of تابِلِan avenger
I have seen none like al-Hajjaj in aiding piety,
nor ever such a pursuer of an avenger's quarry.
وَماand not أَصبَحَhas come to be الحَجّاجُal-Hajjaj يَتلوtending رَعِيَّةًa subject people
بِسيرَةِin the manner of مُختالٍa swaggerer وَلاnor مُتَضائِلِone who cowers
Nor does al-Hajjaj govern his subjects
in the manner of a swaggerer or one who cowers.
وَكَمand how many مِنof عَشيdim-sighted العَينَينِin both eyes أَعمىblind فُؤادُهُhis heart

And how many a dim-eyed man, blind at heart,
you have set straight, and one whose head turned from the truth,
بِسَيفٍwith a sword بِهِwith it لِلَّهِfor God تَضرِبُyou strike مَنwhoever عَصىhas disobeyed

with a sword, with which you strike the disobedient for God,
at the bases of their necks, above their shoulders.
شَفَيتَyou healed مِنَof الداءِthe sickness العِراقَIraq فَلَمand did not تَدَعleave

You cured Iraq of its sickness, and did not leave
any misgiving there after the earthquakes' tumult.
وَكانوand they were كَذيlike one with داءٍa disease أَصابَfound شِفائَهُits cure

And they were like a sufferer whose cure was found
by a doctor versed in the illness lodged beneath the lower ribs.

عَنِfrom القَلبِthe heart عَينَيthe two eyes of كُلِّevery جِنٍّjinn وَخابِلِand a maddening spirit
He cauterized the disease with the cautery iron, until with it he drove
from the heart the two eyes of every jinn and maddening spirit.

And we lived in a land, O son of Yusuf, where no
official cared what bribes he took.

When two litigants came before them, they deemed
the one offering rewards more entitled to justice.

finds the most generous of all whom a suppliant may ask.
وَهُمand they لَيلَةَon the night of الأَهوازِal-Ahwaz حينَwhen تَتابَعواthey followed one another

And they, on the night of al-Ahwaz, when they followed one another,
were amid troops of enemies and men who withheld support.
