تَمَنّىwished for جَريرٌJarir دارِماًDarim بِكُلَيبِهِin exchange for his Kulayb
وَهَيهاتَand far indeed مِنfrom شَمسِthe sun of النَهارِthe day الكَواكِبِthe stars
Jarir wished for Darim in place of his Kulayb;
Yet how far the stars are from the daytime sun!
وَلَيسَتand is not كُلَيبٌKulayb كائِنَينَto be كَدارِمٍlike Darim
وَوَدَّand wished جَريرٌJarir لَوif only عَطِيَّةَAtiyyah غالِبِGhalib
Nor will Kulayb ever be like Darim;
And Jarir wished that Atiyyah were Ghalib.
