هَلاwhy not صَبَرتَyou steadied أُمَيَّO Umayy النَفسَthe soul إِذwhen جَبُنَتit grew afraid
فَتُبلِيَso you might offer اللَهَGod عُذراًan excuse مِثلَlike مَنone who صَبَراstood firm
Why did you not, Umayy, steady your soul when it quailed,
and so offer God an excuse, like one who stood firm?
لَوif only كُنتَyou had إِذwhen جَشَأَتit surged with fear سَكَّنتَyou calmed جِروَتَهاits turmoil

If only, when it surged with fear, you had calmed its turmoil,
and had not turned your back on them amid battle’s din!
