إِذwhen نَحنُwe نُخبِرُwe convey بِالحَواجِبِwith the eyebrows بَينَناbetween us
ماwhat فيin النُفوسِthe souls وَنَحنُwhile we لَمdid not نَتَكَلَّمِwe speak
When, with our eyebrows, we tell each other
When we conveyed to one another, with our eyebrows,
what lies within our souls, though we have not spoken—
what lay in our souls, though we had not spoken.
وَلَقَدand indeed رَأَيتُكِI saw you فيin المَنامِthe dream ضَجيعَتيmy bedfellow
وَلَثَمتُand I kissed مِنfrom شَفَتَيكِyour two lips أَطيَبَthe sweetest مَلثَمِkiss
Indeed, I saw you in a dream, lying beside me,
And indeed I saw you in a dream as my bedfellow,
and kissed upon your lips the sweetest kiss.
and took the sweetest kiss from your lips.
وَغَدٌand tomorrow وَبَعدَand after غَدٍtomorrow كِلاboth يَومَيهِماtheir two days
يُبديwill reveal لَكِto you الخَبَرَthe news الَّذيthat لَمdid not تَعلَميyou know
Tomorrow and the morrow after—both those days—
And tomorrow and the day after—both those days—
will reveal to you the news you had not known.
will reveal to you the news you did not know.
وَالخَيلُand the horses تَعلَمُknow أَنَّناthat we فُرسانُهاtheir horsemen
وَالعاطِفونَand those who wheel back بِهاwith them وَراءَbehind المُسلَمِthe man abandoned to the enemy
The horses know that we are their horsemen,
And the horses know that we are their horsemen,
and that we wheel them back after a comrade abandoned to the foe.
and those who wheel them back behind the man abandoned to the foe.
أَسلابُspoils يَومِthe day of قُراقِرٍQuraqir كانَتwere لَناours
تُهدىare given as gifts وَكُلُّand all تُراثِthe inheritance of أَبيَضَa fair, noble man خِضرِمِopen-handed
The spoils of the day of Qarqarā were ours,
The spoils of the day of Quraqir were ours,
bestowed upon us, as was every legacy of a noble, munificent lord.
given as gifts, along with all a fair, open-handed man's inheritance.
تَطَأُthey trample الكُماةَthe armored warriors بِناwith us astride وَهُنَّwhile they عَوابِسٌscowling
وَطءَthe trampling of الحِصادِharvested grain وَهُنَّwhile they لَسنَare not بِصُيَّمِstanding idle
With us astride, they trample armored champions, grim-faced,
They trample armored warriors with us astride, scowling,
as harvested grain is trodden—though they are not fasting.
as harvested grain is trampled, while they do not stand idle.
نَعصيwe strike إِذاwhen كَسَرَhas broken الطِعانُspear-fighting رِماحَناour lances
فيamong المُعلَمينَthe marked warriors بِكُلِّwith every أَبيَضَbright blade مِخذَمِkeen-edged
We remain defiant when spear-fighting shatters our lances,
We strike when spear-fighting has broken our lances,
among warriors marked by battle-signs, with every keen white blade.
among the marked warriors, with every bright, keen-edged blade.
وَإِذاand when الحَديدُiron عَلىupon الحَديدِiron لَبِسنَهُthey wore it
أَخرَجنَthey brought out نائِمَةَsleeping الفِراخِthe chicks الجُثَّمِcrouching
And when they don iron upon iron,
And when they don iron upon iron,
they drive out the sleeping mother of the huddled nestlings.
they bring out the sleeping, crouching chicks.
