A high-necked, lean Syrian she-camel, like one craning to look

Toward distant figures—a hoarse-voiced bird of prey.

Or an Akhdarī wild ass of the waste, keeping watch,

Firm in a resolute, undivided purpose.

Dark-coated, he herds bands of she-asses and gathers them

Around al-Khudādah, like flocks of ostriches.

For months he grazed with them, roaming the open wastes with them,

Embracing their necks, deprived of nothing.

Through both months of Rabīʿ, grazing the lush earth,

    Until Jumādā, wreathed in blossoms.

At al-Daḥl, every dark night he keeps up

A throaty rattle, or a bray following a low drone.

Until, when the buhma-grass shed its seed, and he had

Awns coming free from it, like keen-edged blades,

He remembered the watering-place, and his belly contracted,

In a scorching wind on a searing day of the Pleiades.

He brayed, and they waited to see where he would turn them,

Scarred by a buried, unshattered stone,

A haunter of mountain passes, forever seizing

Another male’s mates through coercion and humiliation.

And he kept weighing for them which of the two watering-places

Was nearer, across a wearisome open expanse of flats:

Should he bring them to Ḍārij, or the waters of al-Sayf?

Like a head-wounded man casting the arrows of allotment.

Until, when black night closed in, he roused them—

Sure-footed on loose ground, a great leaper over mounds.

He would keep them together on the way to water, but for his surliness:

He drives off the young asses and scorns the aged males.

Until, on the third evening, he came with them

Upon a spring at a watering-place they knew.

He feared for them Baḥīr, who had made ready for them

In a hidden hollow, daubed with the earth’s dust.
