Darim
لَمِنsurely among بِدَعِthe novelties of الأَيّامِthe days ذاتِfull of العَجائِبِwonders
For the Bahilites to lampoon Darim
Is surely one of the novelties of wonder-filled days.
أَباهِلَO Bahila هَلdoes ...? فيin دَلوِكُمyour bucket إِذwhen نَهَزتُمُyou hoisted
بِهاwith it كَرِشاءِlike the rope of اِبنَيthe two sons of عِقالٍʿIqal وَحاجِبِand Hajib
O Bahila, does your bucket, when you hoist it, have
A rope like that of the sons of ʿIqal and Hajib—
رِشاءٌa well-rope لَهُfor it دَلوٌa bucket تَفيضُoverflows ذُنوبُهاits bucketful of water
عَلىupon المَحلِthe drought-stricken land أَعلىthe top of دَلوِهاits bucket فيamong الكَواكِبِthe stars
A rope with a bucket whose ample water overflows
Upon drought-stricken land, its rim among the stars?
فَمَنso whoever يَكُmay be أَمسىhas reached evening غابَhas vanished عَنهُfrom him فُضوحُهُhis disgrace
فَلَيسَthen is not فُضوحُthe disgrace of اِبنَيthe two sons of دُخانٍDukhan بِغائِبِabsent
Though another's disgrace may be hidden by evening,
The disgrace of Dukhan's two sons is never hidden.
لَعَمرِكَby your life إِنّيindeed I وَالأَصَمَّand al-Asamm وَأُمَّهُand his mother
لَفيsurely in مَقعَدٍa sitting-place فيin بَيتِهاher house مُتَقارِبِclose-set
By your life, I, al-Asamm, and his mother
Sit close together in her house.
تَقولُshe says وَقَدwhile already ضَمَّتshe has clasped بِعِشرينَwith twenty digits حَولَهُaround him
أَلاah لَيتَwould that إِنّيindeed I زَوجَةٌa wife لِاِبنِto the son of غالِبِGhalib
She says, clasping him with all twenty fingers and toes:
'Ah, would that I were a wife to Ibn Ghalib!
لَأَرشُفُthen I would sip ريحاًa scent لَمnot (past) تَكُنbe باهِلِيَّةًBahili
وَلَكِنَّهاbut it ريحُthe scent of الكِرامِthe noble الأَطايِبِthe purest
Then I would sip a scent that was not Bahili,
But rather the scent of the noble and pure.'
بَنوthe sons of دارِمٍDarim كَالمِسكِlike musk ريحُthe scent of جُلودَهُمtheir skins
إِذاwhen خَبُثَتturns foul ريحُthe smell of العَبيدِthe slaves الأَشايِبِof mixed descent
The sons of Darim—their skins' scent is like musk,
When the smell of slaves of mixed descent turns foul.
أَلاlo كُلُّevery بَيتٍhouse باهِلِيٍّBahili أَمامَهُbefore it
حِمارٌa donkey وَعِدلاand two balanced loads نِحيِa skin of سَمنٍghee وَرايِبِand curdled milk
Lo, before every Bahili house
Stand a donkey and two balanced loads of ghee and curdled milk in skins.
يُؤَدّىis paid بِهاwith it عَنهُمon their behalf خَراجٌtribute وَإِنَّهُمand indeed they
لِجُروَةَto Jurwa كانواthey were جُنَّحاًbowed in submission لِلضَرائِبِto the levies
With these, tribute is paid on their behalf; indeed, they
Were bowed before Jurwa, submitting to levies.
إِذاif اِبناthe two sons of دُخانٍDukhan واقِفاboth stood at وِردَthe watering-place of عُصبَةٍa band
لِئامٍbase men وَإِنand even if كانواthey were قَليليhaving few الحَلايِبِmilch camels
If Dukhan's two sons joined a band at its watering-place—
Base men, even if they had few milch camels—
لَقالواthey would surely say اِخسَآbegone, you two ياO اِبنَيthe two sons of خانٍKhan فَإِنَّكُمfor indeed you
لِئامٌbase men وَشَرّابونَand habitual drinkers سُؤرَthe leavings of المَشارِبِthe watering-places
They would say, 'Begone, you two sons of Khan! For you
Are base men, and drinkers of the watering-places' leavings.'
فَظَلَّso remained الدُخانِيّونَthe Dukhanis تُرمىare pelted وُجوهُهُمtheir faces
عَلىat الماءِthe water بِالإِقبالِon approaching رَميَthe pelting of الغَرائِبِthe stray camels
So the Dukhanis remained, their faces pelted
At the water as they approached, as stray camels are pelted.
أَباهِلَO Bahila إِنَّindeed الماءَwater لَيسَis not بِغاسِلٍable to wash away
مَخازِيَdisgraces عَنكُمfrom you عارُهاtheir shame غَيرُnot ذاهِبِgoing away
O Bahila, water cannot wash away
Your disgraces, whose shame will never fade.
وَإِنَّand indeed سِبابيكُمmy trading insults with you لَجَهلٌsurely folly وَأَنتُمُwhile you
تُباعونَyou are sold فيin الأَسواقِthe markets بَيعَlike the sale of الجَلايِبِslaves brought for sale
Indeed, my trading insults with you is folly, while you
Are sold in the markets like slaves brought for sale.
