وَلَيلَةَand one night بِتناwe spent the night بِالغَرِيَّينِat al-Ghariyyayn ضافَناhe came to us as a guest
عَلىat الزادِthe provisions مَمشوقِslender الذِراعَينِthe two forelegs أَطلَسُa dust-gray wolf
And one night, as we stayed at al-Ghariyyayn, a guest joined us
at our meal: a dust-gray wolf with slender forelegs.
تَلَمَّسَناhe sought us out حَتّىuntil أَتاناhe reached us وَلَمand had not يَزَلceased
لَدُنsince فَطَمَتهُshe weaned him أُمُّهُhis mother يَتَلَمَّسُhe searches for food
He sought us out until he reached us, and had never stopped
searching for food since his mother weaned him.
وَلَوand if أَنَّهُhe إِذwhen جاءَناhe came to us كانَhad been دانِياًnear
I would have clothed him لَوif أَنَّهُhe كانَwere يَلبَسُto wear clothes
And had he been close when he came to us,
I would have clothed him—if he were one to wear clothes.
وَلَكِنbut تَنَحّىhe withdrew جَنبَةًto one side بَعدَماafter دَناhe drew near
فَكانَso he was كَقَيدِabout the length of الرِمحِthe spear بَلrather هُوَhe أَنفَسُfarther away
But he withdrew to one side after drawing near,
and was a spear’s length away—rather, farther still.
فَقاسَمتُهُso I shared with him نِصفَينِin two halves بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهُand him
بَقِيَّةَthe remainder زاديof my provisions وَالرَكايِبُwhile the riding camels نُعَّسُwere drowsy
So I shared with him, half for me and half for him,
the rest of my provisions, while the riding camels dozed.
وَكانَand was اِبنُson of لَيلىLayla إِذwhen قَرىhe fed as a guest الذِئبَthe wolf زادَهُhis provisions
عَلىat طارِقِa night visitor الظَلماءِthe darkness لاnot يَتَعَبَّسِhe scowls
And Ibn Layla, when he fed the wolf his provisions,
did not scowl at the visitor in the darkness.
