نَعىhe announced the death of ليto me أَباAbu حَربٍHarb غَداةَthe morning لَقيتُهُI met him
بِذاتِat Dhat الجَوابيal-Jawabi صادِراًreturning أَرضَthe land of عامِرِAmir
He announced Abu Harb’s death to me the morning I met him
at Dhat al-Jawabi, returning from the land of Amir.
فَقُلتُso I said أَتَنعىdo you announce the death of غَيثَthe life-giving rain for كُلِّevery يَتيمَةٍorphan girl
وَأَرمَلَةٍand widow وَالمُعتَفينَand those seeking aid الأَفاقِرِthe destitute
So I said: Do you announce the death of the rain for every orphan girl
and widow, and the destitute seekers of aid?
لِيَبكِlet weep عَلىfor سَلمٍSalm يَتيمٌan orphan وَبائِسٌand one in distress
وَمُستَنزَلٌand one forced down عَنfrom ظَهرِthe back of ساطٍa long-striding steed مُثابِرِtireless
Let an orphan and a man in distress weep for Salm,
and one brought down from a long-striding, tireless steed,
تَداعَتconverged عَلَيهِagainst him الخَيلُthe cavalry تَحتَbeneath عَجاجَةٍa dust cloud
مِنَof النَقعِdust مَعبوطٍstirred up عَلىover القَومِthe men ثائِرِrising
against whom the cavalry converged beneath a cloud
of dust, stirred up and rising over the men.
وَمُستَلحِمٍand many a man trapped in battle يَدعوcalling for help كَرَرتَyou charged back وَراءَهُbehind him
كَتَكرارِlike the repeated charges of لَيثِthe lion of الغابَتَينِthe two thickets المُهاصِرِthe mauling one
And many a man trapped in battle called out—you charged back behind him,
like the repeated charges of the mauling lion of the two thickets.
وَكَمand how many مِنof يَدٍa kindness ياO سَلمُSalm لاnot تَستَثيبُهاyou seek recompense for it
نَفَحتَyou bestowed إِلىupon مُستَمطِرٍone seeking rain or bounty غَيرِnot شاكِرِgrateful
And how many a gift, O Salm, for which you sought no reward,
you bestowed on one who sought your rain yet gave no thanks!
وَإِنand although كانَhad سَلمٌSalm ماتَdied ماnot ماتَhas died ماwhat بَنىhe built
وَلاnor ماwhat أَتىhe did مِنof صالِحٍgood فيamong المَعاشِرِthe people
And though Salm has died, what he built has not died,
nor the good he did among the people.
