أَلَمdid … not تَرَyou see قَيساًQays قَيسَQays عَيلانَʿAylān شَمَّرَتgirded themselves for action
أَلَم تَرَ قَيساً قَيسَ عَيلانَ شَمَّرَت
لِنَصريto aid me وَحاطَتنيand protected me هُناكَthere قُرومُهاtheir chieftains
لِنَصري وَحاطَتني هُناكَ قُرومُها
Have you not seen Qays—Qays ʿAylān—gird themselves
To aid me, their chieftains shielding me there?
فَقَدfor indeed حالَفَتallied with قَيسٌQays عَلىagainst الناسِthe people كُلِّهِمall of them
فَقَد حالَفَت قَيسٌ عَلى الناسِ كُلِّهِم
تَميماًTamim فَهُمso they مِنهاare of them وَمِنهاand of them تَميمُهاtheir Tamim
تَميماً فَهُم مِنها وَمِنها تَميمُها
For Qays have allied against all mankind
With Tamim: they are of Tamim, and Tamim is of them.
وَعادَتand opposed عَدُوّيmy enemy أَنَّbecause قَيساًQays لَأُسرَتيare indeed my clan
وَعادَت عَدُوّي أَنَّ قَيساً لَأُسرَتي
وَقَوميand my people إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle الناسُthe people عُدَّis reckoned قَديمُهاtheir ancient lineage
وَقَومي إِذا ما الناسُ عُدَّ قَديمُها
And they opposed my enemy, for Qays are indeed my clan
And my people, when people's ancient lineages are reckoned.
لَناours is المِنبَرُthe pulpit الغَربِيُّwestern وَالناسُand the people كُلُّهُمall of them
لَنا المِنبَرُ الغَربِيُّ وَالناسُ كُلُّهُم
يَدينُsubmit لَهُمto them جُهّالُهاtheir foolish ones وَحَليمُهاand their wise one
يَدينُ لَهُم جُهّالُها وَحَليمُها
Ours is the western pulpit, and all the people—
Their foolish and their wise—submit to them.
