By my life, Ibn Ahwaz indeed led a campaign
By my life! Indeed Ibn Ahawz led a battalion
through which every road yielded to Islam.
By which Islam's every path was humiliated
ثَنَيتَyou wheeled ذُكورَmales الخَيلِthe horses مِنfrom أَهلِthe people of واسِطٍWasit
وَكُلَّand every مُفَدّاةِcherished; worth ransoming الرِهانِracing سَبوقِoutstripping others
You wheeled the stallions of the people of Wasit,
You bent the stallions of the men of Wasit
and every cherished, fleet racing mare,
And every swift-running of the wager

bare-hoofed, being shod with iron, as though they were,
Swords which, when the caller calls out, are like
when the caller shouts, the hounds of Saluq.
The dogs of Sulouq that bark
جَعَلناwe placed بِقِندابيلَat Qindabil بَينَbetween رُؤوسِهِمtheir heads
وَأَجسادِهِمand their bodies شَهباءَsteel-gray ذاتَpossessing خُروقِrents; breaches
At Qindabil we placed between their heads
We made their heads and bodies between our spearheads
and their bodies a steel-gray onslaught that tore breaches,
Flaming bodies full of gashes
بِكُلِّwith every مُضيءٍgleaming كَالهِلالِlike the crescent وَفَخمَةٍand an imposing host
لَهاit has غَبيَةٌa rain shower مِنfrom عارِضٍa rain cloud وَبُروقِand flashes of lightning
with every blade gleaming like the crescent, and a mighty host
With every shining crescent moon and magnificent one
with a shower from a rain cloud and flashes of lightning.
Having an aversion from a prominent one and lightning
وَشَهباءَand a steel-gray host قادَتهاled it صَناديدُchampions فِتنَةٌstrife
نَطَحناwe rammed فَأَمسَتand so it became غَيرَnot ذاتِpossessing فُتوقِbreaches
And a steel-gray host led by champions of strife,
And flaming ones led by the champions of strife
we rammed, and it could break through no more.
We gored so they were left without skulls
