عَلَيَّ وَلا الفَضلَ الَّذي أَنا شاكِرُه
By my life, I shall not forget the favors bestowed
By my life! I shall not forget the hands
Upon me, nor the bounty for which I am grateful.
That have favored me, nor the grace for which I am grateful,

بِمُطَّرَحِ الأَرجاءِ ما أَنا حاذِرُه
Abu al-Ashbal summoned me when they tossed to and fro
The father of cubs called me when
In a place of far-flung reaches—the things I dreaded.
Dangers were striking from all quarters, which I feared,
فَأَنقَذَنيso he rescued me مِنهاfrom them وَقَدand already خِفتُI feared أَنthat أَرىI see
فَأَنقَذَني مِنها وَقَد خِفتُ أَن أَرى

رَهينَةَ أَمرٍ ما تُرامُ تَراتِرُه
So he rescued me from them, though I had feared I would find myself
And he saved me from them though I dreaded
A captive of an ordeal whose terrors could not be faced.
To become captive to a fate beyond remedy,
وَلَستُand I am not بِناسٍat all forgetful مِنهُfrom him نُعماهُhis bounty إِذsince جَلَتit dispelled

عَشا بَصَرٍ ما كانَ يُسفِرُ حائِرُه
Nor shall I forget his kindness, for it dispelled
And I am not of those whose favors are lost
The dimness of vision whose bewildered gaze would not brighten.
When the vision of an owl cannot see what makes it wander.
