رَأَيتُI saw بُحورَthe seas of أَقوامٍpeoples نُضوباًdried up

وَبَحرُكَand your sea ياO أَبانُAban يَفيضُoverflows يَجريflows
I have seen men's seas run dry,
But your sea, O Aban, overflows and flows on.

You race the foaming torrents of Bajila
Toward turbid waters with massive crests,

Toward Abu Aban's surging torrent,
Which shatters every arch and bridge.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتknows بَجيلَةُBajila أَنَّthat مِنكُمamong you

فَوارِسَهاits horsemen وَصاحِبَand the guardian of كُلِّevery ثَغرِfrontier
Bajila well knows that among you are
Its horsemen and the guardian of every frontier,
وَحَمّالَand the bearer of العَظائِمِgreat burdens حينَwhen ضاقَتgrew tight

And the bearer of great burdens, when
Their spacious breasts grow tight with every care.

When they race for noble deeds, they attain them
With Bajila's hands, not clumsy left hands.

And whoever seeks to match your deeds is made to climb
The crests of mountain heights, rugged for all men.
وَكَمand how many لِلمُسلِمينَfor the Muslims أَسَحتَyou set flowing يَجريflowing
بِإِذنِby the permission of اللَهِGod مِنof نِهرٍa river وَنَهرِand a river
How many have you set flowing for the Muslims,
By God's leave—river after river!
فَمِنهُنَّand among them المُبارَكُal-Mubarak حينَwhen ضاقَتgrew too narrow
بِهِfor it الأَنهارُthe rivers لَيلَةَthe night فاضَit overflowed يَسريflowing by night
Among them is al-Mubarak, when room grew scant
For it in the rivers, the night it overflowed and ran.
جَمَعتُI gathered لِطَيبَةَfor Tayba الحاجاتِthe petitions لَمّاwhen

I gathered my petitions for Tayba, when
They converged and my breast grew tight with them.
فَقُلتُso I said اِبنُthe son of الوَليدِal-Walid هُوَhe المُرَجّىthe one hoped in
لِحاجاتٍfor needs يَنوءُstruggles to rise بِهِنَّunder them ظَهريmy back
So I said: Ibn al-Walid is the one I hope in
For needs beneath whose weight my back labors.

With your wealth, my verse shall endure forever;

Grateful praise, with every caravan.

And what prize, if she is set free
To me by your bonds, could match Tayba, no paltry prize?

Bonds made firm by her father's two hands,
With oaths of his and the most binding vow.
