    أَرسى قَواعِدَها الرَحمَنُ ذو النِعَمِ

    A caliphate whose choice by counsel was no usurpation;

The All-Merciful, Lord of blessings, laid its foundations firm.

It belonged to Uthman; he held its caliphate without injustice.

Then the people violated the greatest sanctities in his person:

Inviolable blood and solemnly binding oaths,

In days when the people's lice were lodged among the locks.

You separated the Christians in their churches

From the worshippers before dawn and at nightfall.

Though together in their place of prayer, their faces

Turned different ways as they bowed to God and the idol.

And how could the bell, rung

By the people of the cross, mingle with reciters? You did not sleep.

You were taught to transfer it from them, as those two understood,

When they judged for them concerning the crops and the sheep—

David and the rightly guided king, when they ruled

On their offspring and the shearing of wool with shears.

So God taught you to relocate their church

Away from a mosque where pure words are recited.

May the mouths of my buckets catch

Some overflow from your mighty rivers:

Either from the Nile, when it hid its islands

And rose above the watermarks and the hillocks,

Or from Abu al-Asi's Euphrates, when

Its billows clashed in a place of gaping breaches.

The bastions of Anat keep battling it

To defend its wall, while it is like a two-humped camel in rut.

From the wall's battlements they fear its onrush,

Though they stand on a height like Khiyam's mighty mountain.

The slayer of his rival, while champions bare their teeth,

And of hunger with fat on a bitter, freezing day.
