I saw the sons of Hanifa on the day they met the foe,
I saw the sons of Hanifa on the day they met in battle,
their souls already surging past their collarbones;
And their souls had already surged up past their collarbones.

blows would clear the engulfing perils from them
Blows dispel the overwhelming perils around them
whenever battle raged at full pitch.
When battle stands on foot and shank.

When they draw their swords, O sons of Lujaym,
When the sons of Lujaym unsheathe their swords,
there is no one to ward them off when they strike.
Then none can ward them off when they strike.

They met those who had marched from Hajar toward them
They met those who marched from Hajar toward them,
under an ill-starred star and a moon gone dark.
Under the ill omen of the star and the moon in its dark phase.
