أَمّاas for قُرَيشٌQuraysh أَباO father of حَفصٍHafs فَقَدso indeed رُزِئَتit has been bereaved
بِالشامِin al-Sham إِذwhen فارَقَتكَit parted from you البَأسَvalor وَالمَطَراand rain
As for Quraysh, Abu Hafs, it has indeed been bereft
Quraysh mourns over you, Abu Hafs,
Of valor and rain in al-Sham, when it parted from you.
When you were befallen by strife, in the Levant,
إِنَّindeed الأَرامِلَthe widows وَالأَيتامَand the orphans إِذwhen هَلَكواthey were ruined
وَالخَيلَand the horses إِذwhen هُزِمَتthey were routed تَبكيweep عَلىfor عُمَراUmar
Indeed, the widows and orphans, when brought to ruin,
When widows and orphans were killed,
And the horses, when routed, weep for Umar.
And horses were defeated,
ماnot ماتَhas died مِثلُthe like of أَبيfather of حَفصٍHafs لِمَلحَمَةٍfor battle
وَلاnor لِطالِبِfor a seeker of مَعروفٍkindness إِذاwhen اِفتَقَراhe became poor
Never has battle lost the like of Abu Hafs,
None like Abu Hafs has died in battle
Nor a seeker of kindness when he falls into need.
Nor for a needy seeker of good has died like Talib
كَمhow many مِنof فَوارِسَhorsemen قَدindeed نادواthey called out إِذاwhen لَحِقواthey caught up

How many horsemen cried out, when they caught up
How many valiant cavaliers shouted your name,
With the cavalry, in your name, until they were fed victory!
Until they tasted victory
لَقَدindeed رُزِئتُمyou have been bereaved بَنيO sons of تَيمٍTaym وَغَيرُكُمُand others besides you
عَلىamid بَوائِبِهاits calamities الخَيرَينِthe two finest men مِنof مُضَراMudar
You, sons of Taym, and others too have indeed been bereaved,
You were scorned, O clans of Taym and others
Amid calamities, of the two finest men of Mudar,
Over the losses of both Khazraj and Mudar
وَالأَكرَمَينِand the two noblest إِذاwhen عُدَّتwere counted فُروعُهُماtheir family branches
وَالأَنعَشَينِand the two readiest to uplift إِذاwhen مَولاهُماtheir dependent عَثَراhe stumbled
And the noblest pair, when their family branches are counted,
The most generous when their branches multiplied
And the readiest to lift their dependent when he stumbles.
And most affluent when their protector stumbled
فَاِبكيso weep هُبِلتِmay you lose your child أَباfather of حَفصٍHafs وَصاحِبَهُand his companion
أَباfather of مُعاذٍMuadh إِذاwhen شُؤبوبُهاits downpour اِستَعَراblazed up
So weep—may you be bereaved!—for Abu Hafs and his companion,
Weep over the calamity of Abu Hafs and his companion
Abu Muadh, when its downpour blazed.
Abu Muadh when misfortunes befell them

War, when it conceived, reached its full term
A war, once kindled, he would consummate it
Through him, when it bore him, the piebald male.
When he sired it, the virile stud
كَمhow many مِنof جَبانٍa coward لَدىamid الهَيجاthe fray دَنَوتَyou drew near بِهِwith him

How many a coward, amid the fray, you drew
How many cowards were led by panic unto fighting
Into combat—without you, he would not have stood firm.
Had it not been for you, they would not have endured
مِنهُنَّamong them أَيّامُdays of صِدقٍtrue valor قَدindeed بُليتَyou were tested بِهاin them

Among them were days of true valor in which you were tested:
Days of loyalty which you endured
The days of Fars, and the days of Hajar.
Days of cavalier, and days of migration
ياO أَيُّهاyou الناسُpeople لاdo not تَبكواweep عَلىfor أَحَدٍanyone

O people, do not weep for anyone
O people! Weep not for one
After the man who met his fate at Dumayr.
Who accepted fate with satisfaction

Of his two hands, one was a sword that offered refuge
His hands were hands that wielded swords for protection
From the enemy; the other, rain that made trees grow.
And rain that makes trees grow

The horses ask, amid the fray, when they close in,
They ask the horses about him during battle
And the suppliants at people's cauldrons and hearthstones:
And the valiant, the people’s pots and stones

Who will slay hunger after the martyr's son, and who
Who will kill hunger after the martyr’s son
Will slay with the sword the clan's ram when he charges back?
And who by the sword will kill the clan’s ram when it charges
