لَعَمريby my life لَئِنeven if قَلَّare few الحَصىthe pebbles فيin بُيوتِكُمyour houses
بَنيsons of نَهشَلٍNahshal ماnot لُؤمُكُمyour baseness بِقَليلِslight
By my life, though the pebbles in your houses are few,
sons of Nahshal, your baseness is not slight.
وَإِنand if كُنتُمُyou are نَوكىfools فَماthen not أُمَّهاتُكُمyour mothers
بِزُهرٍfair وَماand not آباأُكُمyour fathers بِفُحولِstallions
And if you are fools, your mothers are not
fair, nor are your fathers stallions.
أَثَورَO Thawr اِبنَson of ثَورٍThawr إِنَّنيindeed I قَدindeed وَجَدتُكُمhave found you
عَبيدَslaves العَصاthe rod مِنof مُسبَعٍa baseborn man وَنَقيلِand an outsider
O Thawr, son of Thawr, I have indeed found you
slaves of the rod—baseborn men and outsiders.
فَصَبراًso be patient أَخاbrother of حَجناءَHajnaʾ إِنَّكَindeed you ذايِقٌwill taste
كَماjust as ذاقَtasted مِنّاfrom us قَبلَكَbefore you اِبنُson of وَثيلِWathil
So be patient, brother of Hajnaʾ: you shall taste it,
as Ibn Wathil tasted it from us before you.
وَحَقٌّand it is fitting لِمَنfor one whose أَمسَتis رُمَيلَةُRumaylah أُمَّهُhis mother
يَسُدُّbars عَلَيهِagainst him اللُؤمُbaseness كُلَّevery سَبيلِpath
And it is fitting for one whose mother is Rumaylah
that baseness should bar his every path.
