O Murr, O son of Suhaym, how can you insult me?
A slave to a slave of base maternal stock, outdone in generosity!

مُوَلَّعٍ بَينَ تَجديعٍ وَتَصليمِ
You were not the first slave to revile his masters,
scarred by nose-cutting and ear-cropping.

The houses of the sons of Sa‘d are built, while your house
rests on a lowly foundation, ruined by disgrace.

are a people full of rashness and crushing violence.

Each one a swayback, his waist like a great jar,
filled with old dates and garlic.

When he sups on old dates, there rises for him
beneath the shaggy blanket, a whirlwind in clustered blasts.
