تُبَكّيlaments عَلىover المَنتوفِal-Mantuf بَكرُBakr اِبنُson of وائِلٍWa'il
وَتَنهىand forbids عَنِfrom اِبنَيthe two sons of مِسمَعٍMismaʿ مَنwhoever بَكاهُماmourned them both
Bakr ibn Wa'il laments al-Mantuf,
The son of Wael weeps for Manṭūf
Yet forbids anyone to mourn Mismaʿ's two sons:
And forbids the weeping for Ibn Mismar's two sons
قَتيلَينِtwo slain men تَجتازُsweep الرِياحُthe winds عَلَيهِماover them both
مُجاوِرُlying beside نَهرَيthe two rivers of واسِطٍWasit جَسَداهُماtheir two bodies
Two slain men over whom the winds sweep,
Two dead whom the winds blow over
Their bodies lying beside Wasit's two rivers.
Their bodies neighbors by the rivers of Wāsiṭ
وَلَوand if أَصبَحاthey both were مِنfrom غَيرِother than بَكرِBakr اِبنِson of وائِلٍWa'il
لَكانَwould surely have been عَلىupon الجانيthe killer ثَقيلاًheavy دِماهُماthe blood of them both
And had they been of any but Bakr ibn Wa'il,
Had they been other than Ibn Wael's sons
Their blood would surely have weighed heavily on the killer.
Their blood would have weighed heavy on their killer
غُلامانِtwo youths نالاthey both attained مِثلَthe like of ماwhat نالَattained مِسمَعٌMismaʿ
وَماand not وَصَلَتjoined عِندَduring النَباتِgrowth لِحاهُماtheir beards
Two youths who attained the like of what Mismaʿ attained,
Two youths who attained what Mismar attained
While their beards had not yet grown together.
Their beards not yet grown at youth
وَلَوand if كانَhad been حَيّاًalive مالِكٌMalik وَاِبنُand the son of مالِكٍMalik
لَقَدsurely أَوقَداthey both kindled نارَينِtwo fires عالٍhigh سَناهُماtheir radiance
And had Malik and Malik's son been alive,
Had Mālik and Ibn Mālik been alive
They would surely have kindled two fires with soaring radiance.
They would have lit two great fires for them
وَلَوand if غَيرُother than أَيديthe hands of الأَزدِthe Azd نالَتreached ذَراهُماtheir lofty heads
وَلَكِنbut بِأَيديby the hands of الأَزدِthe Azd حُزَّتwere slit طُلاهُماtheir throats
And had hands other than the Azd's reached their lofty heads—
Had other than Azd's hands reached their remains
But by the hands of the Azd their throats were slit.
Their graves would not have been despoiled by Azd
