تَمَنّىwishes المُستَزيدَةُal-Mustazidah, the woman seeking more ليfor me المَناياdeaths
وَهُنَّand they وَراءَbeyond مُرتَقِبِthe watcher of الجُدورِthe walls
Al-Mustazidah wishes deaths upon me,
And they lie beyond the watcher of the walls.
فَلاso no وَأَبيby my father لَماsurely what أَخشىI fear وَرائيahead of me
مِنَof الأَحداثِthe calamities وَالفَزَعِand the terror الكَبيرِgreat
No, by my father: surely what I fear ahead of me,
Of calamities and the great terror,
أَجَلُّgraver عَلَيَّfor me مَرزِئَةًa bereavement وَأَدنىand nearer
إِلىto يَومِthe day of القِيامَةِresurrection وَالنُشورِand rising from the dead
Is a graver bereavement to me, and nearer
To the Day of Resurrection and rising,
مِنَthan البَقَرِthe cattle الَّذينَwho رُزِئتُI was bereaved of خَلّواthey left
عَلَيَّupon me المُضلِعاتِthe crushing hardships مِنَamong الأُمورِlife's affairs
Than the cattle I was bereaved of, who left
Upon me life's crushing burdens.
أَماwill ... not? تَرضىbe content عُدَيَّةُUdayyah دونَshort of مَوتيmy death
بِماwith what فيin القَلبِthe heart مِنof حَزَنِthe sorrow of الصُدورِthe bosoms
Will Udayyah not be content, short of my death,
With the sorrow of bosoms within my heart,
بِأَربَعَةٍfor four رُزِئتُهُمُI was bereaved of them وَكانواand they were
أَحَبَّthe dearest of المَيِّتينَthe dead إِلىto ضَميريmy innermost heart
For four whom I lost, who were
The dearest of the dead to my innermost heart?
بَنِيَّmy sons أَصابَهُمstruck them قَدَرُthe decree of المَناياdeaths
فَهَلso is there? مِنهُنَّfrom them مِنany أَحَدٍperson مُجيريone who shelters me
My sons—death's decree struck them;
Is there anyone to shelter me from those deaths?
دَعاهُمit called them لِلمَنِيَّةِto death فَاِستَجابواso they answered
مَدىthe span of الآجالِthe allotted lifetimes مِنfrom عَدَدِthe number of الشُهورِthe months
It called them to death, and they answered—
The span of their allotted lives, counted in months.
وَلَوand if كانواthey were بَنوsons of جَبَلٍa mountain فَماتواand then died
لَأَصبَحَit would have awoken وَهوَwith it being مُختَشِعُbowed low in الصُخورِthe rocks
And had they been a mountain's sons, and died,
It would have awoken with its rocks bowed low.
وَلَوand if تَرضَينَyou would be content مَمّاfrom what قَدalready لَقيناwe have suffered
لِأَنفُسِناfor ourselves بِقاصِمَةِwith a breaker of الظُهورِbacks
And if you would be content, from what we have suffered
Ourselves, with a blow that breaks backs,
رَأَيتِyou would see القارِعاتِthe battering calamities كَسَرنَthey broke مِنّاof us
عِظاماًbones كَسرُهُنَّtheir breaking إِلىtoward جُبورِmending
You would see that calamities have broken in us
Bones whose breaking leads to mending.
فَإِنَّfor indeed أَباكِyour father كانَused to كَذاكَlikewise يَدعوpray
عَلَيناagainst us فيin القَديمِthe distant past مِنَof الدُهورِthe ages
For your father used to pray likewise
Against us in ages long past.
فَماتَso he died وَلَمand did not يَزِدهُincrease him اللَهُGod إِلّاexcept
هَواناًhumiliation وَهوَwhile he was مُهتَضَمُbrought low in النَصيرِthe defender
So he died, and God added nothing to him but
Humiliation, with his defender brought low.

سِماكَيthe two Simāk stars of كُلِّevery مُهتَلِكٍdestitute فَقيرِpauper
We were bereaved of Ghalib and his father; they were
The twin Simāk stars for every destitute pauper.
