ياO اِبنَson of رَبيعٍRabīʿ هَلquestion particle رَأَيتَyou have seen أَحَداanyone

O son of Rabīʿa, have you ever seen anyone
O son of Rabīʿ, have you seen anyone
who survives the days, or is granted immortality?
who outlasts the days, or lives forever?
كَأَنَّماas though كانَhad been عُبَيدٌʿUbayd أَرمَداsore-eyed
بِالغَورِin the lowlands حَتّىuntil أَنجَدَتthey climbed to Najd وَأَنجَداand he climbed to Najd
It was as though ʿUbayd were sore-eyed
It was as though ʿUbayd had been sore-eyed
in al-Ghawr, until the she-camels reached Najd—and he reached it too:
in the lowlands, until they climbed to Najd, and he too—
قَلائِصٌyoung she-camels إِذاwhen عَلَونَthey ascend فَدفَداa broad upland
يَرمينَthey cast بِالطَرفِwith their gaze النَجاءَthe heights الأَبعَداthe farthest
young she-camels—whenever they climbed a broad, level upland,
young she-camels that, when they mount a broad upland,
they cast their gaze toward the farthest flight;
cast their gaze toward the farthest heights.
إِذاwhen قَطَعنَthey cross جَدجَداًa hard, level plain وَجَدجَداand another hard, level plain
كَأَنَّناas though we إِذاwhen جَعَلنَthey place ثَمهَداThamhad
whenever they crossed one hard, level tract, then another.
Whenever they cross one hard plain and another,
It was as though we, when they put Thamad
it is as though we, when they leave Thamhad
ذاتَon the side of اليَمينِthe right وَاِفتَرَشنَand they take as a bed القَردَداthe rugged upland
نَعوجُwe steer مِنهُنَّfrom among them نِعاماًostriches أُبَّداwild
on the right and spread themselves over the rugged upland,
on their right and make the rugged upland their bed,
were veering from among them like wild, untamed ostriches.
were steering wild ostriches among them.
