When al-Naḍr's courier comes bearing his aid,
and his authority, he casts off Ibn Ghālib's shackles.
لَئِنif indeed مالِكٌMālik أَمسىhas become قَدِalready اِنشَعَبَتbranched away بِهِwith him
شَعوبُShaʿūb (Death) الَّتيwho يودىperishes لَهاto her كُلُّevery ذاهِبِtraveler
If Mālik has now been carried away
by Shaʿūb—Death, to whom every traveler is lost—
لَقَدindeed أَنزَلَsent down اللَهُGod الَّذيwhom تَلتَقيyou meet بِهِwith Him
عَلَيهِupon him مَناياfates of المَوتِdeath مِنfrom كُلِّevery جانِبِside
God, whom you will meet, has indeed sent down
upon him the dooms of death from every side.
لَئِنif indeed مالِكٌMālik أَمسىhas become ذَليلاًabased لَطالَماindeed, for long
سَعىstrove فيin الَّتيthat which لاmay there be no فاmouth لَهاfor it غَيرَnot آيِبِreturning
If Mālik has now become abased, long has he
striven in that calamity—may it have no mouth!—without turning back.
لَئِنif indeed كُنتَyou had قَدalready أَبكَيتَmade weep قَبلَكَbefore you نُسوَةًwomen

If you made women weep before your own turn,
noble women—these are the reversals of fortune.
تُجازىyou are requited بِماfor what جَرَّتbrought about يَداكَyour two hands وَبِالَّذيand for that which

You are requited for what your two hands wrought, and for what
you knew; so do not be distraught at the turns of misfortune.
وَأَصبَحَand he became فيin دارٍan abode هُناكَthere مُفَزَّعاًterrified
إِذاwhen مالِكٌMālik جافىturned away بِهِfrom him كُلُّevery جانِبِside
And he is now in an abode there, terror-stricken,
when every side turns away from Mālik.
