أَقولُI say لِصاحِبَيَّto my two companions مِنَby way of التَعَزّيconsolation
وَقَدand already نَكَّبنَthey skirted أَكثِبَةِthe dunes of العُقارِal-Uqar
I say to my two companions, seeking consolation,
When they had skirted the dunes of al-Uqar:
أَعينانيhelp me, you two عَلىwith زَفَراتِsighs of قَلبٍa heart
يَحِنُّyearns بِرامَتَينِat Ramatayn إِلىfor النَوارِNawar
Help me, you two, with the sighs of a heart
That yearns at Ramatayn for Nawar.
إِذاwhenever ذُكِرَتwas mentioned نَوارُNawar لَهُto it اِستَهَلَّتbegan to flow
مَدامِعُthe tear ducts of مُسبِلِone shedding العَبَراتِtears جارِflowing
Whenever Nawar is mentioned to it, there overflow
The tear ducts of a weeper, streaming with tears.
فَلَمso not أَرَI see مِثلَthe like of ماwhat قَطَعَتshe crossed إِلَيناto us
مِنَof الظُلَمِthe darkness الحَنادِسِpitch-black وَالصَحاريand the deserts
So I have never seen the like of what she crossed to reach us:
Of pitch-black darkness and deserts.
تَخوضُshe wades through فُروجَهُits gaps حَتّىuntil أَتَتناshe came to us
عَلىdespite بُعدِthe distance of المَناخِthe encampment مِنَfrom المَزارِthe visiting-place
She waded through its gaps until she came to us,
Despite the encampment's distance from the meeting-place.
وَكَيفَand how وِصالُunion مُنقَطِعٍone cut off طَريدٍdriven away
يَغورُhe descends مَعَwith النُجومِthe stars إِلىtoward المَغارِthe setting-place
And how can one cut off and driven away find union,
Who descends with the stars toward their setting-place?
كَسَعتُI struck from behind اِبنَthe son of المَراغَةِal-Maraghah حينَwhen وَلّىhe turned away
إِلىto شَرِّthe worst of القَبائِلِthe tribes وَالدِيارِand the dwellings
I struck the son of al-Maraghah from behind when he turned away,
Toward the worst of tribes and dwellings,
إِلىto أَهلِthe people of المَضايِقِthe cramped confines مِنfrom كُلَيبٍKulayb
To the people of cramped confines among Kulayb:
Dogs beneath small tents.
أَلاlo! قَبَحَmay disgrace الإِلَهُGod بَنيthe sons of كُلَيبٍKulayb
ذَويthose with الحُمُراتِthe donkeys وَالعَمَدِand the tent poles القِصارِshort
Lo, may God disgrace the sons of Kulayb,
Those with donkeys and short tent poles.
نِساءٌwomen بِالمَضايِقِin cramped confines ماnot يُواريconceals
مَخازِيَهُنَّtheir shameful deeds مُنتَقَبُthe face-covering of الخِمارِthe headscarf
Women in cramped confines; unconcealed remain
Their shameful deeds, despite a headscarf's face-covering.
وَلَوand if تُرمىwere pelted بِلُؤمِwith the baseness of بَنيthe sons of كُلَيبٍKulayb
نُجومُthe stars of اللَيلِthe night ماnot وَضَحَتshone لِساريfor a night traveler
And if pelted with the baseness of the sons of Kulayb,
The stars of night would not shine for a night traveler.
وَلَوand if لَبِسَwore النَهارَthe day بَنوthe sons of كُلَيبٍKulayb
لَدَنَّسَwould surely stain لُؤمُهُمtheir baseness وَضَحَthe brightness of النَهارِthe day
And if the sons of Kulayb wore the day,
Their baseness would surely stain the brightness of day.
وَماand not يَغدوgoes out in the morning عَزيزُthe mighty man of بَنيthe sons of كُلَيبٍKulayb
لِيَطلُبَto seek حاجَةًa need إِلّاexcept بِجارِwith a protector
And no mighty man of Kulayb's sons sets out in the morning
To seek what he needs except with a protector.
بَنوthe sons of السيدِal-Sid الأَشائِمُbringers of ill luck لِلأَعاديto the enemies
نَمَونيraised me لِلعُلىto high honor وَبَنوand the sons of ضِرارِDirar
The sons of al-Sid, ill omens to their enemies,
Raised me to high honor, as did the sons of Dirar.
