نِعمَexcellent is الفَتىthe youth خَلَفٌKhalaf إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle أَعصَفَتblew fiercely
نِعمَ الفَتى خَلَفٌ إِذا ما أَعصَفَت
ريحُwind الشِتاءِwinter مِنَfrom الشَمالِthe north wind الحَرجَفِfierce and bitterly cold
ريحُ الشِتاءِ مِنَ الشَمالِ الحَرجَفِ
What a fine youth Khalaf is when there rages
the winter wind from the bitter, blustering north!
جَمَعَbrought together الشِواءَthe roast meat مَعَwith القَديدِthe dried meat لِضَيفِهِfor his guest
جَمَعَ الشِواءَ مَعَ القَديدِ لِضَيفِهِ
كَرَماًout of generosity وَيَثنيand follows it up بِالسُلافِwith choice, free-run wine القَرقَفِshiver-inducing
كَرَماً وَيَثني بِالسُلافِ القَرقَفِ
He brings together roast meat and dried meat for his guest,
out of generosity, and follows it with choice wine that makes one shiver,
مِنof عاقِرٍpotent wine كَدَمِlike the blood الرُعافِa nosebleed مُدامَةٌaged wine
مِن عاقِرٍ كَدَمِ الرُعافِ مُدامَةٌ
صَهباءَtawny أَشبَهَهاresembled it دِماءُblood الرُعَّفِthose whose noses bleed
صَهباءَ أَشبَهَها دِماءُ الرُعَّفِ
of a potent kind—aged wine like the blood of a nosebleed—
tawny, resembling the blood of those whose noses bleed.
لِلَّهِto God دَرُّكَyour excellence حينَwhen يَشتَدُّintensifies الوَغىthe din of battle
لِلَّهِ دَرُّكَ حينَ يَشتَدُّ الوَغى
وَلَنِعمَand indeed excellent is داعيsummoner الصارِخينَthose crying out الهُتَّفِthe loud shouters
وَلَنِعمَ داعي الصارِخينَ الهُتَّفِ
God bless you when the din of battle intensifies!
And what a fine summoner of those who cry out loudly!
أَنتَyou المُرَجّىthe one relied upon لِلعَشيرَةِfor the clan كُلِّهاall of it
أَنتَ المُرَجّى لِلعَشيرَةِ كُلِّها
فيin المَحلِdrought أَوor صَكِّthe clash الجُموعِthe armies الزُحَّفِadvancing en masse
في المَحلِ أَو صَكِّ الجُموعِ الزُحَّفِ
You are the hope of the entire clan,
in drought or in the clash of advancing hosts.
