And my grandfather is ʿIqāl; whoever takes pride in him
My father whom one would boast of
is raised above the people, higher in rank than whomever he wishes.
Was raised above whomsoever he wished

And my uncle whom Ma'add chose as ruler

Over people when they gathered in Ukaz
هُوَhe الأَقرَعُal-Aqraʿ الخَيرُthe noble الَّذيwho كانَwas يَبتَنيbuilding
أَواخِيَtethering-stakes مَجدٍof glory ثابِتٍfirmly fixed أَنto يُنَزَّعاbe uprooted
is al-Aqraʿ the noble, who used to build
He is the best, the virtuous bald one
the tethering-stakes of glory, firmly fixed against being uprooted.
Who built for me enduring lofty glories
فَياso, O أَيُّهَذاyou there المُؤتَليthe oath-taker لِيَنالَنيto assail me
أَبيmy father كانَwas خَيراًbetter مِنthan أَبيكَyour father وَأَرفَعاand loftier
So, O you who swear an oath to assail me:
So O you who aspires to attain me
my father was better than your father, and loftier.
My father was better than yours and loftier
وَهَذاand this أَوانيmy hour اليَومَtoday ياO آلَclan of نَهشَلٍNahshal
رَدَيتُI struck صَفاكُمyour rock مِنfrom عَلٍon high فَتَصَدَّعاso it split apart
And this is my hour today, O clan of Nahshal:
And this is my time, O clan of Nahshal
I struck your rock from on high, so it split apart.
I have repelled your class from the heights and it fragmented
رَدَيتُI struck بِمِرداةٍwith a battering-stone بِماwith what كانَhad أَوَّليmy forebear
رَداكُمstruck you فَدَنّىso it sank low سَعيُكُمyour striving فَتَضَعضَعاand so it collapsed
I struck with a battering-stone, with what my forebear had
I have repelled you with a firm repulse
struck you with; so your striving sank low and collapsed.
As the first of mine had repelled you and weakened your endeavor
