And many a night that darkened over me—

Bilal cleared its darkness away from me,

With the finest right hand of one called upon for good,

A left hand helping it whenever it rises.

It is right that I should hasten to you,

With punishment and bounty in your hand.

You see eyes humbly turned toward him,

As they gaze fixedly when the crescent moon is sighted.

I saw you prevail as you shot

In defense of ancestral honor, when the archery contest grew earnest.

For I swear by Him to whom Quraysh made pilgrimage,

At His Kaaba, with all whom Ilal embraced—

And I keep my word; so remember my oath—

At Mecca, where the camel-saddles were laid down:

There shall surely journey to you through the valley of Jamʿ

Rhymes, with swift she-camels beneath them.

How many a forefather of yours towers high, and there grow

Through him the lofty, towering peaks!
