فَاِسطاعَand he could مِنكَfrom you أَباO father of الأَشبالِthe lion cubs لَاِنجَحَراhe would surely hide in a den
And if you met the one whose byname you bear,
If you were to meet the one whose epithet you bear,
And if he could, O Father of Cubs, he would hide from you in a den.
And there emerged from you, O father of cubs, radiance,
ياO اِبنَson of الخَلائِفِthe caliphs إِنَّindeed الخَيلَthe horses قَدalready عَلِمَتhave learned
إِذاwhen أَثارَتthey stirred up عَلىover أَبطالِهاtheir champions القَتَراthe dust
O son of caliphs, the horses have indeed learned,
O son of caliphs, verily the horses have known
When they stir up dust over their champions,
When they were roused against their champions,
أَنَّكَthat you أَوَّلُهُمthe foremost of them طَعناًin spear-thrusting وَأَعطَفُهُمand readiest of them to wheel back
وَراءَbehind مُرهَقِthe hard-pressed one of أُخراهُمtheir rearguard إِذاwhen جَأَراhe cried out
That you are foremost in spear-thrusts, and readiest to wheel back
That you are the first of them in stabbing, and the most skillful
Behind the hard-pressed man in their rearguard when he cries out.
Behind the heavily-armed, when they moaned,
وَصابِرٍand many a steadfast man بِكَthrough you لَولاbut for ماwhat رَأىhe saw صَنَعَتdid
يَداكَyour two hands بِالخَيلِto the horses وَالأَبطالِand the champions ماnot صَبَراhe stood firm
And many a man stood firm through you; but for seeing what
And [you are] enduring, through you, were it not for what your hands wrought
Your hands did to steeds and champions, he would not have stood firm.
Against the horses and champions, [he] would not have endured,
إِنَّindeed الوَليدَal-Walid أَباfather of العَبّاسِal-Abbas أَورَثَهُbequeathed to him
مِنَof المَكارِمِnoble qualities مِنهاamong them الرُجَّحُthe weighty ones الكُبَراthe great ones
Indeed al-Walid, father of al-Abbas, bequeathed to him
Indeed, al-Walid, Abul 'Abbas, bequeathed to him
Among noble qualities, those most weighty and great,
Of the noble traits, including innate excellence,
وَجَفنَةًand a serving-bowl مِثلَlike حَوضِthe basin of البِئرِthe well مُترَعَةًbrimming

And a brimming serving-bowl, like the basin of a well,
And a palm like the basin of a well, copiously watered,
Driving hunger and cold away from whoever comes to it.
Which drives away from the one who comes to it hunger and leanness,

Hollow, of shiz-wood, full and crowned
Hollow in the shin, filled, garlanded
With camel-hump meat; around it you see throngs
With the waterbag straps - you see around it turbidity

Of men and young boys who have been carried there,
From the men and youths who have been carried
Wearing waist-wraps, and lamb-like little ones who wear none.
Girt, and not girt like the mindless camels.
كِلاهُماboth of them مُشبَعٌwell fed رَيّانُthirst-quenched وارِدُهُits visitor

الأَيِّبونَthose returning إِلَيهاto it وَالَّذيand the one who بَكَراcame early
Its visitors of both kinds are fed full and have their thirst quenched—
Both of them sated, its comers and goers,
Those returning to it and the one who came early.
The petitioners to it and the early risers to it.

Indeed bounty, al-Abbas's companion, has allied itself with him,
Verily, generosity is the companion of al-'Abbas - he allied himself to it
And generosity too; they are brothers who have flooded humankind,
And munificence - they are brothers who have drowned mankind in freshness

Scattering kindness by handfuls with their hands; his bounty—
Hastening with their hands benevolence to its obtainer
The east wind falls short of it, yet generosity has never slackened.
Which the mornings and munificence never flag.

Indeed we came to you when there settled in our courtyard
Verily we have come to you when there settled upon our land
A biting year of famine that splits stone,
From the years, ailments that split the rocks,
مُنتَجِعيكَseeking your bounty اِنتِجاعَseeking sustenance from الغَيثِthe rain إِذwhen وَقَعَتarrived

Seeking your bounty as one seeks rain, when
Seeking you as the rain is sought when it falls,
Its first signs come with rain that gives the trees life.
Its harbinger with life by which he enlivens the trees,

Verily us and you are like the bucket which fell
Into the hands of a well-filler who was unaware of the praise,
Into the hands of one drawing water, who praised, and was unaware,

From a water-drawer who found no bucket to lower
Of one drawing who did not find a bucket and lowered it
To him save one formed of praise openly expressed.
Upon him except from praise which appeared.

O son of al-Walid, have the people not already learned
O son of al-Walid, do not the people know
That you and the sword bring Islam to whoever disbelieves?
That you and the sword are submission for whoever disbelieved?
