وَأُقسِمُand I swear أَنthat لَولاwere it not for قُرَيشٌQuraysh وَماand what مَضىhas passed
إِلَيهاto them وَكانَand was اللَهُGod بِالحُكمِin judgment أَعلَماmost knowing
And I swear: were it not for Quraysh and what has passed
to them—and God knew best in judgment—
لَكانَwould have been لَناours مَنwhoever يَلبَسُwears اللَيلَthe night مِنهُمُamong them
وَضَوءُand the light النَهارِof day مِنamong فَصيحٍan eloquent speaker وَأَعجَماand a foreign-tongued speaker
ours would be all among them who wear the night
and the light of day, eloquent and foreign-tongued alike.
وَمِنّاand among us الَّذيthe one who أَحياsaved the life of الوَئيدَthe child buried alive وَلَمand did not يَزَلcease
أَبِيّاًproudly defiant عَلىagainst الأَعداءِthe enemies أَنto يَتَهَضَّماbe wronged
And among us is he who saved the child from burial alive, and never ceased
to stand defiant against his enemies, refusing to be wronged.
وَجارٍand many a neighbor مَنَعناهُwe protected him وَلَولاand were it not for حِبالُناour ropes
لَأَصبَحَhe would have become شِلوَa torn corpse الحَربِof war غِبّاًafterward مُقَسَّماcut into pieces
And many a neighbor we protected—were it not for our ropes,
he would, in war's wake, have become a corpse cut to pieces.
رَفَعناwe raised لَهُfor him حَتّىuntil جَرىcoursed النَجمُthe star دونَهُbeneath it
وَحَلَّand came to rest عَلىupon رُكنِa pillar المَجَرَّةِthe Milky Way سُلَّماa ladder
We raised for him—until the star coursed beneath it—
a ladder that came to rest on a pillar of the Milky Way.
