وَإِنand even if كانَhe had قَدalready صَلّىprayed ثَمانينَeighty حِجَّةًa year
وَصامَand fasted وَأَهدىand offered البُدنَthe sacrificial camels بيضاًwhite خِلالُهاtheir qualities
And even if he had prayed for eighty years,
Even if he prayed eighty pilgrimages
and fasted and offered sacrificial camels, white in their features,
And fasted, sacrificing white camels
لَئِنif indeed نَفَرُthe men of الحَجّاجِal-Hajjaj آلُthe house of مُعَتِّبٍMuʿattib
لَقواhave met دَولَةًa turn of fortune كانَwas العَدُوُّthe enemy يُدالُهاbeing granted it
if indeed al-Hajjaj's men, the house of Muʿattib,
If the pilgrims, the family of Mu'tib fled
have met a turn of fortune in which their foe gained ascendancy,
They would meet a state which the enemy brandished
لَقَدindeed أَصبَحَhave become الأَحياءُthe living مِنهُمamong them أَذِلَّةًabased
وَفيand in النارِthe Fire مَثواهُمtheir abode كُلوحاًscowling سِبالُهاits whiskers
indeed, the living among them have become abased,
The living among them have become humiliated
and in the Fire is their abode, its whiskers scowling.
And their abode is in the fire, its flames blazing
وَكانواand they used to يَرَونَsee الدائِراتِthe turns of misfortune بِغَيرِهِمupon others than themselves
فَصارَso became عَلَيهِمupon them بِالعَذابِwith torment اِنفِتالُهاtheir turning
And they used to see turns of misfortune befall others;
And they used to watch others' misfortunes
so those turns swung upon them with torment.
So ruin befell them with punishment unleashed
وَكانَand he would إِذاwhenever قيلَit was said اِتَّقيfear اللَهَGod شَمَّرَتsurged

And whenever he was told, 'Fear God,' there surged
When told, 'Fear God', arrogance would grip him
within him a pride that none could challenge.
Arrogance that cannot be overcome in dispute

Bear my message to the one who was in China, when
Guide me to the one who was in China when
planks carrying their sail cast him toward India:
India cast at him tablets with its edicts inscribed
هَلُمَّcome إِلىto الإِسلامِIslam وَالعَدلُand justice عِندَناwith us
فَقَدfor indeed ماتَhas died عَنaway from أَرضِthe land of العِراقِIraq خِبالُهاits bane
Come to Islam, and justice is with us,
Come to Islam and justice is with us
for the bane of the land of Iraq has died.
The lowly ways have died out from Iraq's realm
فَماso no أَصبَحَتnow exists فيin الأَرضِthe earth نَفسٌa soul فَقيرَةٌpoor
وَلاnor غَيرُهاany other than it إِلّاexcept سُلَيمانُSulayman مالُهاits wealth
So there is now no poor soul upon the earth,
No humble soul remains upon the earth
nor any other, without Sulayman as its wealth.
Except Solomon, his wealth hers to claim
يَمينَكَyour right hand فيamong الأَيمانِright hands فاصِلَةٌdecisive لَهاfor them
وَخَيرُand the best شِمالٍleft hand عِندَin خَيرٍdoing good شِمالُهاits left hand
Your right hand is the decisive one among right hands,
Your right hand settles matters with oaths
and the left hand paired with it is the best at doing good.
While the best left hand is with the virtuous its mate
فَأَصبَحتَso you have become خَيرَthe best of الناسِpeople وَالمُهتَدىand the one followed for guidance بِهِthrough him
إِلىto القَصدِthe right course وَالوُثقىand the firmest bond الشَديدِstrong حِبالُهاits cords
So you have become the best of people, and the guide
You have become the best of people and the guided one
to the right course, and the firmest bond, whose cords are strong.
To moderation, fortitude, rope tightly braided
يَداكَyour two hands يَدُthe hand of الأَسرىthe captives الَّتيwhich أَطلَقَتهُمُfreed them
وَأُخرىand the other هِيَit is الغَيثُthe rain المُغيثُrelief-giving نَوالُهاits bounty
Of your two hands, one is the captives' hand that freed them,
Your hands are hands that freed prisoners
and the other is rain, its bounty bringing relief.
Another pours rain, its charity raining
وَكَمand how many أَطلَقَتhave loosed كَفّاكَyour two palms مِنof قَيدِa fetter بائِسٍa wretched man
وَمِنand of عُقدَةٍa knot ماnot كانَwas يُرجىhoped for اِنحِلالُهاits undoing
And how many a wretched man's fetter your two palms have loosed,
How many shackles have your palms released
and many a knot whose undoing was beyond hope.
From the misery, knots beyond hope of unravelling
كَثيراًmany مِنَof الأَسرىthe captives الَّتيwho قَدalready تَكَنَّعَتhad grown cramped
فَكَكتَyou unbound وَأَعناقاًand necks عَلَيهاupon them غِلالُهاtheir shackles
Many of the captives who had grown cramped
Many prisoners you released from fetters
you unbound, and necks with their shackles upon them.
Removed chains from necks they encircled
وَجَدناand we have found بَنيthe sons of مَروانَMarwan أَوتادَstakes دينِناour faith
كَماjust as الأَرضُthe earth أَوتادٌstakes عَلَيهاupon it جِبالُهاits mountains
And we have found the sons of Marwan to be the stakes of our faith,
We found the Marwanids pillars of our faith
just as the earth's mountains are stakes upon it.
As the earth has mountains, their peaks unwilling to bow
وَأَنتُمand you لِهَذاfor this الدينِfaith كَالقِبلَةِlike the qibla الَّتيwhich
بِهاby it إِنif يَضِلَّstray الناسُpeople يَهديguides ضَلالُهاits wanderers
And you are to this faith like the qibla, which,
While you are to this faith like the qiblah
if people stray, guides those who have wandered from it.
Which if people lose their way, guides their misguidance
